slightly modded gq qhats the best way to spend 3k on more
Hey i have a short wheel based gq mods so far are:
35" trepadors
3" suspension lift
40mm bodylift
turboed
snorkel
front arb bar
side bars and rear bar
Ive got 3k to spend on new goodies whats the recommendations?
only want to lock the front
lower gears?
cb radio???
bigger turbo
any help would be greatly appreciated

I am in a similar position. I am looking at doing transfer gear reduction and then a front air locker that can be turned on and off.
Running the 35s and having transfer reduction might be a plus with the larger tyres. As far as turbo upgrade goes if you are happy with what you currently have stick with it, a manifold and turbo upgrade is going to cost more than 3K installed.
You could always put a 3inch exhaust on if you were after a few more KW.
Anway best of luck with the upgrades

I would consider a winch and front and rear lockers... You hardly use a front a rear is your best bet and yes the LSD is good but your eventually going to put one in you will use the rear so much more i have found...mudhunt wrote:Hey i have a short wheel based gq mods so far are:

Lower gears are good but i would do the first lot first......
However i wouldnt bother with a big turbo to get more power you will need to spend in excess of 6k.

I paid $1600 fully installed for the reduction gears - Might be a bit much but I went to the very best and got great service (had an issue with it after the install - simply had to pay for parts to fix the problem - not an actual issue with the gears though)

Anyway... You don't really NEED any of that stuff... I'd strongly suggest a UHF (as I previously mentioned) and if you are in the habit of wheeling alone I'd definitely go the winch... other than that, I'd save my money.

im not doing comp work though im still undecided about going air or auto locker. People have such conflicting views about them. Some say auto is fine others hate them with a passion. The fact is an arb setup is really damn expensive cheapest i can get it for is round 1700 not fitted (including compressor) nzd.
the locker will cost 1800 and a uhf will cost about 350 and a winch will cost about 500 for a second hand low mount.
then if you want gears buy em for 850-1000 and install em your self. i knew nothing about gears but i decided to rip it all apart and if i could not do it take the bits in to the mechanic and they will do it for me. it was hard but persistence won and i got it done. just get a repair manual and a few basic tool

Its all about driving to your vehicle... personally I'm not a huge fan of autolockers but would consider one in the purchasing process... If you understand how they work, you can turn them on and off as easily as you could an airlocker. auto locker and side slope = front end of car slipping down the slope, need to be able to turn it off IMO. can get in all sorts a trouble if you cant have control of which direction it goes. go air locker, ARB, bomb proof, winch, and must have UHF, ther 3k right there
gq wagon now a gq ute, straight gas tb42 with a thing on the side that makes it go fast

which leaves $1700 for a front air locker!
If i had to pick one it would be the winch. You never know when you migh get stuck on your own or some1 elses winch packs up when all of you are stuck in the crap. Also if you get a locker you will probably attempt a lot harder tracks so when u get stuck you will be really STUCK!

Don't want to start another auto vs air/pro locker argument, but I have had an auto locker since 2004 and never busted a CV. I am running 33's. been to the cape with them in and all was good.
