what sort of wheeling do you do?

Do you NEED to spend the $3g's now, or want to?

what do you find stops you?
Got a winch?

upgrade

Post by AC »

I am in a similar position. I am looking at doing transfer gear reduction and then a front air locker that can be turned on and off.
Running the 35s and having transfer reduction might be a plus with the larger tyres. As far as turbo upgrade goes if you are happy with what you currently have stick with it, a manifold and turbo upgrade is going to cost more than 3K installed.
You could always put a 3inch exhaust on if you were after a few more KW.

Anway best of luck with the upgrades

one of the single best mods i did was a locker in the front. that is a must IMO. if your got a 4.2 diesel gears are not that important

I would consider a winch and front and rear lockers... You hardly use a front a rear is your best bet and yes the LSD is good but your eventually going to put one in you will use the rear so much more i have found...

Lower gears are good but i would do the first lot first......

However i wouldnt bother with a big turbo to get more power you will need to spend in excess of 6k.

if only running 35's, go a pair of air/pro lockers. Turbo deisel will run 35's easy, if wanting to spend more after that get the 43% transfer gears.

Only performance upgrade I would worry about would be an intercooler, if you already have a 3" exhaust.

I paid $1600 fully installed for the reduction gears - Might be a bit much but I went to the very best and got great service (had an issue with it after the install - simply had to pay for parts to fix the problem - not an actual issue with the gears though)

Oh by the way - If you don't have a UHF - I recommend getting one, they're super useful when you're driving with others.

NZ dollars? Oh... Yeah, get yourself a tank of fuel and you might even have cash left over to buy a pack of smokes! :D

Sorry mate, couldn't resist...

Anyway... You don't really NEED any of that stuff... I'd strongly suggest a UHF (as I previously mentioned) and if you are in the habit of wheeling alone I'd definitely go the winch... other than that, I'd save my money.

you reckon i defintitely need to lock the front, traction is an issue. Dont tend to go wheeling by myself. I do think a radio and a winch would be sensible buying though. nYeah diesel is like 1.80 at the moment!!!!!!

im not doing comp work though im still undecided about going air or auto locker. People have such conflicting views about them. Some say auto is fine others hate them with a passion. The fact is an arb setup is really damn expensive cheapest i can get it for is round 1700 not fitted (including compressor) nzd.

the locker will cost 1800 and a uhf will cost about 350 and a winch will cost about 500 for a second hand low mount.

then if you want gears buy em for 850-1000 and install em your self. i knew nothing about gears but i decided to rip it all apart and if i could not do it take the bits in to the mechanic and they will do it for me. it was hard but persistence won and i got it done. just get a repair manual and a few basic tool

Its all about driving to your vehicle... personally I'm not a huge fan of autolockers but would consider one in the purchasing process... If you understand how they work, you can turn them on and off as easily as you could an airlocker. Remember though, at first you will struggle with the autolocker and any kind of locker in the front WILL affect steering when locked.

auto locker and side slope = front end of car slipping down the slope, need to be able to turn it off IMO. can get in all sorts a trouble if you cant have control of which direction it goes. go air locker, ARB, bomb proof, winch, and must have UHF, ther 3k right there
gq wagon now a gq ute, straight gas tb42 with a thing on the side that makes it go fast

I would get second hand

Winch =$700
UHF $200
HD lower arms and steering components =$400

which leaves $1700 for a front air locker!

If i had to pick one it would be the winch. You never know when you migh get stuck on your own or some1 elses winch packs up when all of you are stuck in the crap. Also if you get a locker you will probably attempt a lot harder tracks so when u get stuck you will be really STUCK!

Jimmy

PS:You could always buy a cheap hand held rechargable UHF. Very handy if your stuck without a winch!!

if you go auto locker you will bust more cvs than the difference between air & auto lock arb air is the only way to go

Don't want to start another auto vs air/pro locker argument, but I have had an auto locker since 2004 and never busted a CV. I am running 33's. been to the cape with them in and all was good. There are a lot of variables to failures, tyre size, terrain, right foot :) etc. I know you're talking about 35's so that equals more stress on the CV's

Cheers,

Tampy
