My motor is gone and it's been sittin for a while and i'm gettin pissed off that i'm not wheelin......
My options are....
1 can get all the gear i need and with a rebuild kit for $600 but i gotta put it all together!
2 Get a block and i can get a gbigger cam with nikki carby's and stuff for around $400 again gotta put it together and might have to buy a rebuild kit!
3 Wait till i find a cheap second hand i can drop straight in!
4 Bite the bullet and buy a full reco motor! About $1200
5 i can get a ute that a guy was workin on slowly is unregistered and doesn't have a tray BUT has a carolla motor and a few other things i wouldn't mind like the ute body and stuff......For $900!

Built swb sierra, building a lwb sierra ute and have a dmax for family camping
Nath you can pick up a good second hand block from a swift or barina for no more than 400 bucks. All you do is then swap all the zook bits onto that block and there you go done. Do that buy the ute, swap the diff centres so you have locked diffs and the low range tranny and then sell the shorty and you'll come out on top.

Based on price and the photo's I have seen, the ute you are talking about is way beyond a sensible amount of work for what you want to do. Engine mounts, driveshafts, a tray, + a 1.3, and engineers certificate, reg, and gazillions of other little things. Trust me, I've done it. (for me it was worth it, but I didn't already have a built, registered 1.3)
Just get a second hand 1.3 (or a reco 1300) and get back on the road. Any other option is more $$$ and stuffing around.
DO NOT stuff around with tuning the 1.3, I don't mind 1.3's for what they are but, but IMHO in a 4WD a motor that goes is better than a high performance motor that doesn't.

you can buy a bare block at pick a part for 60 bucks, out of a suzuki swift which they have plenty of.
Or you can buy the complete motor for 190, with accessories. Just got to look at the kms and check under the airfilter, usually if its oily in the airfilter its not worth pulling out.
I did that with mine, my motor cracked a piston, so i bought a block for 60 bucks, swapped the head, sump etc. The motor has more compression now than new - runs perfect on premium.
Its a good idea to pull the head off and check the bore before you buy, alot of their motors get water in them from sitting around. Cylinder bores start pitting with rust.

id be inclined to steer away from the rebuild, i did mine about 2 years ago, as it turns out would have been cheaper to buy 2 complete engines and just swap them over...

Cab is clean, chassis is clean. Motor possibly has more blow by than exhaust. There is WAY more work getting this ute to a RWC standard than replacing a motor in your current car.
Chase up a 2nd hand engine, swap it in. Its an EASY job and shouldn't cost you too much.

I'm a 2nd year app and money isn't that easy to come by i'm only 19 so drink a bit would be cuttin down on that to save!

OK, let's assume you did buy that tray. WTF???? it ran a 4K corolla motor??? Why would you put that in a 1.3? Only Grimbo was that tight, and even he used a 5K.
There's lots of barinas/swifts in pick a part with G13's in them. If youre up for the labour that's how to get it going cheap. It's a bit of work though - sump, pick up, pulleys, camshaft, manifolds, flywheel.
Good learning experience though, just be sure your carby, alternator etc is all i good nick now or you'll just transfer the problems.
You're also seem to be going through a few motors there, maybe look at sealing, fuel and oil quality, cooling, and driving style.

This motor has lasted a while (Year and a half!) i change the oil every 4 or 5 trips but the carby was playin up lately so need a new one of them!
I put it down to it revvin it's head off on the highway then ideling in the bush? Must admit it used to get a caining before the gearing was sorted out but the last 4 months of it's life was snow techical drivingso ideling and down hill using the engine as braking! WOULD THIS KILL IT QUICKER?
I'll post up for a cheap motor i can drop in for now then hopefully when that go's i will be qualified and wack a 1.6 or something in!
