WHATS LEGAL THESE DAYS??????????
I live in QLD, and want to know what the highest LEGAL suspension you can go, springs and body and whats the biggest tyre you can run??????
and not get fingered
im guessing tyre size is different for individual cars so you all know have got a GQ
and i know removing swaybars is illegal, are those auto-disconnect swaybars legal

Re: WHATS LEGAL THESE DAYS??????????
Variable depending on make/model/year of car, what aftermarket lifts have been engineered for it already and dependant on how nice the coppa is feeling when he/she pulls ya up.whythef@#!not wrote:I live in QLD, and want to know what the highest LEGAL suspension you can go, springs and body and whats the biggest tyre you can run??????

suspension is an increase of the 1/3rd bumpstop distance - rule of thumb is 2" though, some can actually get 1" more, some less
tyres- 15mm IFS, 50mm Solid axle front
track width increase- 26mm's so bigger tyres might need lesser offset rims
body lift- 2" engineered only
swaybars must be connected when onroad if factory fitted, after market swaybar disconnects are legal

Pretty much my understanding.chikoroll_ wrote:suspension is an increase of the 1/3rd bumpstop distance - rule of thumb is 2" though, some can actually get 1" more, some less
You might want to check this. There are some modifications which are different for IFS vs solid axles front and rear, but I don't think tyre size is one of them. Until the NCOP is adopted, it's 15mm larger. NCOP allows 50mm for 4wd, but I suggest you call the Qld Transport Vehicle Modification line - I found them to be quite helpful when I was up there.chikoroll_ wrote:tyres- 15mm IFS, 50mm Solid axle front
Again, check. I think 26mm is the difference for IFS vehicles, but beam axles front and rear are allowed 50mmchikoroll_ wrote:track width increase- 26mm's so bigger tyres might need lesser offset rims
Mine required pre-approval from Qld Transport, then an department inspection - no engineer. When I did mine, 2" was definitely the limit - no exceptions.chikoroll_ wrote:body lift- 2" engineered only
I've heard this, but never seen anything in the regs. When I had my 4by engineered in SA, the engineer wasn't the slightest bit concerned that my rear swaybar had been removed - it passed the handling tests without it, and that was all that mattered. His report doesn't mention it, so I hope it shows up in his photos...chikoroll_ wrote:swaybars must be connected when onroad if factory fitted, after market swaybar disconnects are legal
why dont i ask the authorities, i have done and the amount of different answers i get, to queensland transport its alright you drive down the street and get a ticket for it..
and as far as asking on here, you can tell which people have a fair idea of what they are talking about and which people are idiots posting useless shit, if you aint gonna post anything usefull about the question DONT POST ANYTHING
looks like i will be goin 2' lift and 2' body, and will have to look into the tyres a bit more
i am pretty sure in qld they are pretty strict on the swaybars, so if the disconnects are legal, will invest in a set of those
cheers for some of the input

Make sure you get the bodylift inspected and you should be right with the 2+2. With the tyres Qld follows the ADRs which state no more than a 15mm increase in diameter and a track increase of 25mm for a IFS and 50mm for a solid. Doesnt matter if its solid, IFS 2wd or 4wd 15mm increase is all you get.

Victoria has very different laws to QLD so not even remotely comparable. Yes it should still be legal in Victoria as long as no other mods have been done and everything is road worthy but best bet if you are worried is to find out from vicRoads yourself. Also make sure you still have all the engineers reports and carry a copy with you when you drive the vehicle.e32 wrote:Interesting, i got a hilux with 3" Body lift and 35" tyres, it was engineered about 6 years ago, and in the report it clearly states all these mods are engineered,
With the new laws, is this still legal?

Too bad they (hotrods) must be over 30 yrs old, must comply with all/any ADRs relevant for that model, and are not actually free from modification laws.dirtyGQ wrote:I would pay double just to have rec/club rego like vintage and hotrods have
But yes, it would be great if there was a recreational/concession rego for modified 4x4s. Aparently tall 4x4 rigs and semis are the reason people die on the roads all the time.

I got pulled up 4 weeks ago, the limit is 15mm over standard no matter if it is torsion bar, coil or leaf. I was in my GU.chickoroll_ wrote: tyres- 15mm IFS, 50mm Solid axle front
But that was just that coppa, they are all different, depends if they got laid the night before.

I have had some 2" lift coils made up for the rear that give the same flex as a 3" lift so you can run a 3" lift shock on the rear. I have normal duty and heavy duty rear 2" lift flexy coils. The only mod needed is a longer rear brake hose.
I don't have these on my web site yet, I just received them Friday. It has been raining today so they haven't been tested yet either.
I don't know if someone at the transport department would find that illegal. Someone might be able to tell me.

Running 315/75 r16's, was dropping the missus and her friends at the Ipswich cup, I was stopped by one of the coppers directing traffic, lucky it was only a verbal warning. He said it comes under the anti hooning laws now so you don't get a defect notice anymore but you get a nice notice to appear in court. Then the 2nd time caught its 48 hours impound then 3rd time it can be confiscation.chickoroll_ wrote:what size tyres were you running? and what did you do to get pulled over?sloshy wrote:I got pulled up 4 weeks ago, the limit is 15mm over standard no matter if it is torsion bar, coil or leaf. ah ok, so you were running 35's
i'd stick to 33's
for only 1"lift difference, they arn't as obvious, 35's just look too big, so are extremely obvious

Funny thing though when I was waiting to go he to walked over and crouched down to look at the writing on tyre, took him a minute or so to find where the size was written. I was thinking " here we go"chikoroll_ wrote:ah ok, so you were running 35's

so if they are going to the trouble to look at the size on the tyre are they going to go to the trouble to look at teh tyre placard, figure out the difference and then give you a ticket? or just give you a ticket and let you sort it out later?sloshy wrote:Funny thing though when I was waiting to go he to walked over and crouched down to look at the writing on tyre, took him a minute or so to find where the size was written. even 7.50r16(about 32") vs 33" is more than 15mm difference. i have heard 1 tyre size increase is generally accepted but how anal are they going to get? by the way.. i got defected for 33's even tho the placard (which the cop didnt look/ask for) said 7.50r16.

well it doesn't really matter what it is named as, they are still illegal modifications, and in the revenue raisers eyes, are dangerous, therefore worthy of taking your money
....bloody ridiculous how there isn't a way to get it legal though....
