should a 1977 fj45 steering box(non power steering) have oil or grease in it???

well i just sold a fully rebuilt one on ebay and the guy has picked it up and taken it home, pulled it apart and now is telling me its full of grease and not oil and it has cost him 6 dollars in degreaser and an hour to clean it. and is trying to tell me onli one seal looks new.
this has never been used since rebuild.

he also wants a partial refund.

so im pretty sure they have oil and not grease in them.. am i right?

Steering Gear Lubricant Type SAE90 gear oil
Steering Gear Lubricant quantity 0.6US qt/ o.5 Imp qt (0.6 liters)

The grease may just have been an assembly grease

the workshop manual advises that you either put in a thick oil or runny grease what does the bloke expect it to be lubed with hopes and dreams

well after a few years of driving I noticed the filler/breather on my steering box and discovered it should have oil. so i basically then poured half a litre of oil straight onto the driveway as the seals were no good. after 5 years of driving with no oil its a little loose but still fine.

grease would work if its worn a litlle but after paying to have it rebuilt I would expect new seals to be in it and oil not to leak out.

unless you were offering a guarantee/warranty on the ebay add - stuff it. we all make stupid purchases sometimes.

Its a fairly old school practice to fill manual steering boxes with a slurry of oil and grease. When I bought my 40 the steering box was dry and I filled it with a mix of about 70% grease and 30% engine oil. Never gave me an ounce of trouble and was a nice tight box (hehe) till I replaced it with 60 series power steering (about 3 years).

Tell him to add the oil to the grease it will thin the grease and thicken the oil. Ah perfect.

yeah, i second that, a manual steering box does not need gear oil, a slurry of grease is all it needs!
