WANT A COMP GQ OR GU PLEASE HELP NEWBIE HERE
WANT A COMP GQ OR GU PLEASE HELP NEWBIE HERE
Folks
My first post here so be gentle I have been participating as a expectator in almost all the competions. And the love for GQ or GU has grown in me,
Can some one help me make decission. I want a Diesel rig bec i love the sound of the diesel engine with turbos and going under water with ease and using the torque.
Now should i go looking a used already done comp truck or go and build one slowly?
If i build what kind of suspension is the best. what to look for etc etc
Currently I running a jeep wrangler JK long wheel with 4" lift locked front and rear 35" MTZ arb bull bar and low reduction 4.88 gears etc etc

I think the best option is to buy a cheap rig in reasonable nic, because you will chop at it and fit custom engine bits.
I brought a 26 grand ute with a turbo kit and cut it to bits.....
JUST my little bit.

V8s are nice, but you cant beat the sound of a turbo working the magic on a juiced up diesel.
Your about a month too late to buy my mates GQ comp ute for $25000, full roll cage, tube tray sliders and whinch bar, injected holden 5L, superior engineering suspension, beadlocked 35" pedes, custom high mount whinch, front and rear ARB lockers etc etc. That should let you know what kinda prices they can go for.

If money and time is no object than purchase a standad truck and build it from scratch the way you want it but chances are if you haven't owned a comp truck you wont know what you want or need.
The better choice IMO is purchase a pre built proven comp truck , you just have to be at the right place at the right time.
To be competitive in speed events you will easily spend 50K upwards for a new truck but prob half that for a pre owned comp truck.

jaybags wrote:I went down this road and in the end i wish i just bought one built already. Then you can add your little touches as you go along. The money and time you will spend is just plain crazy and even worse if you cant do most of the work yourself. Just buy one that has been raced.
no matter what you do it will be a 15 year old car sort of thing. so an abused comp truck is just a few welds and plates away from being a non abused road driven car. MOST comp cars are looked after between rounds too where alot of normal cars are just serviced whenever they remember.
turbos are nice but i'd rather be blown
Thanks Mate
Keep an eye for me on a good stromg gq truck and yes need a navvie too

Unless you own a 4wd workshop, building one from scratch will cost a fortune and take endless hours.
Some nice ones come up from time to time, but mostly from up north.
PS, once you find it and need a navvie. You know were to find me
Cheers Chris
Even with a shop will cost a fortune.whitemav wrote:Keep your eye out for a well built GQ mate.

If your gunna do it yourself i'd start with a gq. give it a 6-7 lift, front and rear diff locks, some decent rubber and the best winch you can afford... This would be enough to get you started and you can learn from there.
Buying a second hand rig may be easier but building thems more fun..

i can vouch for the rig in gu johno`s post ` , i went and looked at it , he gave me a drive
and its a great start for a comp truck, i loved it and wanted it but the missus wants soemthing more standard as she woulda been driving it every day , it goes pretty hard an steers good for something lifted with 35`s on it,
i say buy it lock it front and rear bit of bar work and go out and get dirty

there are no such thing as 37 simex they only go to 36".
the turbo diesel 4.2 is a pretty bullet proof motor. it will take a massive gulp of water or something to break it. they seem to last forever.
if it does need rebuilding unless u are good on the tools u will have to pay someone to do it. not a massive job but will take at least $5000 out of your pocket i am pretty sure, depends on how bad it is.
laminating the axles does not cost all that much superior do kits for you to weld on i am pretty sure, either way the diffs are most likely going to have to come out and be stripped to be welded to.
the chromoly axles are and cv's are about $1300 i think.
