I have had a quick search, but I couldn't find what i was looking for.

I need to know if there are any differences between a front axle of a diesel 4.2 and a petrol 4.2 gq patrol, for an 88 model. Also, if there are any differences between LWB and SWB for this.

Not that I'm aware of apart from the possibility of ratios, their are a few different rear Diffs though.
There is a leaf sprung ute chassis so the mounts on the diff would be different.
Did you mean specifically axle?? There is left and right.

My problem is that a mates gq is in a bad way and could do with all the bearings and everything on the right side so I thought a swap would be easier, but the diff is still good,could he use his original diff in a new housing?

Should be fine mate... Though personally, I'd much rather just replace the bearings. :P

The housing is the same I believe (for the front) but you'll have to be careful with centres as there were a few different ratios... check the plate on the drivers side firewall (I think) should be able to read the diff code off there to work out what ratio your diffs are.

The ratio is on the crownwheel, it has to be divided out though as it will say 37:9 or something similar.

Do the bearings, much easier!

Yeah...

From the sound of things, you're planning on using a second hand diff housing to replace yours because the bearings are stuffed?

No offense mate but thats pretty daft... You won't know the condition of the ones you're putting in and chances are you'll have to do it anyway... It really isn't a hard task to replace the bearings anyway, much simpler than replacing the entire diff.
