I had a go at replacing the front crank seal today, however,i couldn't get the bolt undone. The issue was i couldn't stop the engine from turning(i think due to the fact that the old girl is LOW in compression)So without the convenience of a rattle gun, what is a good method?

put it in gear

or if its applicable, wedge a bar and socket against something, ideally the chassis rail, and hit the starter

sounds dodgy, bit its actually widely used :)

MAKE CERTAIN THE ENGINE WILL NOT FIRE UP, HOLD EDIC IN FUEL SHUTOFF.
