temp sender disco to RR

Post by PSI250 »

did a quick search but didn't reveal too much.

I'm putting a 96 disco 3.9 in my 86 rangie and obviously the temp senders are differant, in both thread size and resistance values.

essentially what i;m looking for is a sender the same thread as the disco one but with the resistance values of the range rover gauge, anyone have any luck finding one??

other options would be using a screw in adaptor to use the rr sender (will sit a fair bit higher though and wont be in the coolant flow as much as before, problem?)
or drilling and tapping the smaller disco thread to suit the larger rr sender (if theres enough meat around there?).

i want to keep running the 3.9L inlet manifold too, dont want to change back to the 3.5 one.

Just thought i'd try and get some info/ideas as i'd say a few people would have done this conversion before.

cheers,
Cal.

How different are the resistance values?

My impression is that the resistances of the gauge sender are similar, and also the hole sizes are similar but one is UNC or pipe or something and one is metric. This applies to 3.9 with V belts up to 93 anyway.

You haven't grabbed the choke light deactivator of the 3.5 by any chance? This sits on top of the manifold in front of the carbs.

The temp gauge sender usually , in a 3.5 and V belt 3.9 sits on the front of the manifold next to the thermo housing. It is a single wire.

Even on my Thor manifold there was plenty of meat to drill a hole for the sender.

fair bit of differance in sender size, heres a pic-
bigger rangie sender sits horizontal infront of the manifold (1986 EFI rangie)
Smaller disco( 96 serp) sender sits vertical next to the CTS on the pass side of the motor

this is the location of where the disco sender is ment to go-

the easiest way it seems seeing i've had no luck finding compatible senders will be to tap my larger rangie sender in here, however i think its going to be borderline to whether there is enough metal around that rasied section to drill and tap(bearing in mind sender size differance from first pic).
Do you (or anyone else) have any pics of where you tapped yours in?

Cheers,
Cal.
