can you tube a tubeless tyre?

I have tubeless tyres but one of the beads has a small section out of it and it leaks air, slowly, but i does leak.

can I put a tube in it?

its a relatively new tyre so I dont want to throw it away

As long and the tyre isnt goin to come over the bead of the rim.. yes you can without a worry

the bead is quite secure under the edge of the rim. There is a small section of the 'outer bead', about 10mm that is missing. its the square bit that sits on the outside edge of the rim if that makes any sense.

when I hosed the truck down the other day, this missing secton was at the bottom most point and some water sat between the bead and the rim and cause it had some water on it, I could see the water bubbling and could just hear the air escaping through the water.

when I called into a tyre place this afternoon, they told me it couldnt be done as the tube would rub against the inside of the tyre...well, of course it would, they all do, but it didnt sound like a good enough reason.

then they wanted to sell me new tyres and rims and it all became obvious

maybe I should 'shop around'

wack a heavy duty tube in it and you will have no more probs.

Sweet. I have a 33 Claw that has done about 2500 km's, and having them swapped on the rims, one got a small chunck removed from the bead. as i couldn't prove that it was caused by the tyre fitter that did it, he wouldn't waranty my tyre.
Went somewhere else, and they said same thing. couldn't be done, but they have a good deal on at the moment. they also offered to "dispose" of the tyre for me. sounds like one of them may have just fitted it up to they're fourby.

its a 33x12.5x15 BFG mud terrain, i reckon its done about 5000kays, its hardly worn at all so I dont want to throw it away

Tube may fix your problem. Find some Simex heavy duty tubes.
mate threw away a BFG MT with less than 100klms on it.... sliced shit out of sidewall on a star picket someone had thrown into a slushy hole we had to cross.

ive done it before with no issues til i blew the tyre out. (old farken tyres)
whoever told you that it couldnt be done is talking shit.

and for what its worth that picture with the little chunk missing is not the sealing surface. they seal down at the bottom of the lip, where the edge of the tyre is, which is rather hard to damage unless the tyre is damaged when off the rim or not installed properly.
could just be some shit in the bead.

find a good honest tyre guy and have a chat, if you find a good one, look after him, an honest tyre guy is hard to find.

If you put a tube in make sure you remove any labels, or other imperfections, from the inside of the tyre which could chafe against the tube.

Mate knock the bead off the tyre and see if the bead is clean, doesn't look like much damage...seen worse
