Wet Feet! 90 Sierra

Post by mike_nofx »

Hey all.

I have a little problem with my zook, every time it rains i get a fair amount of water leaking into the cabin.
It comes from under the dash (this will be hard to explain!) from a seam? i can see where it is dripping from. maybe i can try get pics.

it pools up in the dash somewhere, and once i get in and drive, first corner i take my right foot gets drenched!

I believe it must be coming in through the vent behind the bonnet (correct term?)

Questions are, has anyone had this problem? how did you fix it?
If not, how do i go about searching for the leak? i cant really see any way of getting in there without pulling the car half apart!

Thanks in advance
Mike

It's just how it is Mike. Still glad you bought a zook? :D

Of my 3 the hardtop leaks the worst. Thankfully it's no issue because it goes straight through the holes in the floor.

From memory there are two pipes that go from the heaterbox to vents in the firewall which is where the water drains out, one of them might have popped off. Been a while since i had my dash out tho.

Yeah, my vents and drains are all clear and it still happens.

More water comes through my doors and windows though anyway.

yeah the grille infront of the window gets clogged with leaves/sand etc - i had to ram a butter knife through mine a few times to un clog it all... with a hose blasting it through... eventually you'll clear the blockage in the vent and all will be well again =)

I used to just put a small towel over my right foot when raining.
not a full size towel but a hand towel.

it is not cool when you forget and then drip drip you have a wet shoe for the night!

Might it be possible you have rust where you can't see under the window seal or just a badly sealing windscreen rubber??

Put a day aside and take youre dash and heaterbox apart, it only requires basic tools and isnt that hard. Gives ya a piece of mind that everything is ok.

make sure when or if you rip the dash and heater out glue some alloy fly screen mesh on the in side of the grill stops all the leaves coming in and blocking it up

my sierra always leaked from the drain hoses that run back the heater box to the firewall. they always uses to pop off, and even when they were on they would leak. some hoses clamps fixed it up fine.
