Gem engines are no better or worse than any other engine remanufacturer. Apart from price when buying an engine, check what sort of warranty it has. I've never myself been a fan of reconditioned engines and I've always rebuilt my own as I know what I'm putting into my engine. Engine remuanufacturers, in my opinion, tend to skimp on using quality parts as it keeps thier costs down and their profit margins up.

GEM use ACL parts which are some of the best you can buy and reco engines have a three year warranty. Gem are machining my engine right now. Maybe a little more expensive than others, but check exactly what they're doing to do to your engine for that price.

Mine will cost around two grand and will include:
- Caustic clean and inspection
- rebore and hone block
- mill block deck and fit with plugs
- crankshaft report and crack test
- crankshaft grind and polish
- redress cam
- dynamic balance
- re-build cylinder head
- pressure test head
- engine re-build kit (ACL components)

I still have to put it back together, but that's half the fun of it. If you take the balancing and cam work out you'll be looking at around $1600.

Its like most companies, they have theyre good and bad sides and reputations. Unfortunately, ive heard more bad than good about GEM, including my engine blowing up a month after warranty expiration, but maybe they have changed theyre ways, you will have to make youre own opinion.
