On my screen anyway - it's really not that much difference or that big. But really, the other guys are right - you will have no insurance hence if you hit someone get ready to file for bankruptcy when they sue you for a million or so due to damages to their person. Also - really, how old are you? Grow up, and be a man.. you don't need 6" for anything - heck, the most I would ever put in anything is 4" unless it was absolutely necessary.

I'm looking at purchasing a GQ Patrol LWB and want a 6" suspension lift with no body lift and rang around a fair few places in VIC and im looking at $4,000 installed or $2800 on its own... could this be right?
Everyone that I've spoken too does not reccomend it for a street registered car for legalities which doesnt bother me but also because they strongly say the ride will be compltetly shit which is bothering me a bit as im planning on going on a 5,000km + holiday early next year around some parts of australia
Cheers,

Buy a new land cruiser with the ground clearence of a coke can, much safer in stability when those sheeps and cows come running out ,
and buy a caravan and stick to the tarmack . Dont forget your walking stick!
Drive a stock live axel hilux around a sharp corner a 110kph then talk about stability!
Its a patrol for f&*( sake! A 6" lift is fark all!

Chubbz - my 2c worth is do it right whether it's 4" or 6"..don't just do it cos it looks - do it legally, let your insurance company know what you have done and be responsible cos I know even over here genuine 4wd's and club guys get a bad rap due to irresponsible 4wders (usually non club guys)!!!
My rig is fully certified and legal, my insurance outfit has photo's of it and all mods and i'm covered on road and off road but thats in NZ.

maciek doesn't car about legalities and insurance everyone so try and get other that.
the 4k would be fore shocks, springs, extended brake lines, adjustable panhards, castor correction, fitting plus maybe some other stuff.
not a bad price but if you bought all the stuff you could prolly fit yourself or get some mates to help you.
i'll even do the work for you if you pay me
ps i drove the silver/grey ke at a couple of west meets with 4ac you were prolly too drunk to remember tho haha

Oh ok..well for maciek's sake i'll put in a dollars worth and say if it can't or won't be done properly and legaly then don't go there!hokey wrote:maciek doesn't car about legalities and insurance everyone so try and get other that.

Don't endanger other peoples safety by your own reckless regard.
And if hokey wants to assist and be paid for it and then be potentially liable himself for work done on an uninsured, non legal vehicle when things go bad so be it.

This is probably why the thread turned the way it has, if it was legal, there may be more constructive commentstwodiffs wrote: Oh ok..well for maciek's sake i'll put in a dollars worth and say if it can't or won't be done properly and legaly then don't go there!

I'm sure there would be, if someone wants to do it right the first time and legaly whether it be Aust or NZ then i'm sure there would be no end of helpful comments and advice.KIWI wrote:This is probably why the thread turned the way it has, if it was legal, there may be more constructive commentstwodiffs wrote: Oh ok..well for maciek's sake i'll put in a dollars worth and say if it can't or won't be done properly and legaly then don't go there!

If it was me that had started this thread then by the time I had finished reading the third page i would be seriously rethinking my motives

i cant beleive im doing this, but i have to agree with grimbo on this one..grimbo wrote:I'm guessing you are referring to rock crawling. Just in experience in Vic lower vehicles with similar size tyres perform better than very tall vehicles
larger tires and lower lift seems to perform better.
went wheeling once with a guy in a GQ with 8" lift , 35s and dual locked.
i got to the top of the track with my little girly 3" lift and 35s, whereas he couldnt even make it up the first step without almost going for a lie down
for most driving people will want to do in a patrol, 4" is more than enough.
theres no point in having such a huge lift and then only running 35s
and then with small tires you will still get caught on your diffs anyway.. (thats why i went to 38s)
if you want to run 40s or bigger then yeh go for the larger lift, but also go for wider track while your at it.
i know a few guys with patrols that have had big lifts and are now taking them out to go smaller.
my GU with 3" and 38s drives better and goes further than a mate with 6" and 35s

oh and to all the people who want a"big lifted truck" just purely for the "look"
why have something just for looks?

couldnt agree more... its just not safe to run without sway bars and have a lifted truck. plus what happens when you have an acco? your screwedjessie928 wrote:i would NOT run a lifted or standard coil sprung truck without stabilizers fitted on the road.
its like chalk and cheese, with stabilisers it would be alot better to drive and a plus is your door handles will not scrape when going around corners.
all you need to do is remove the links on 1 side of the truck before you hit the trails, EASY
when you are airing up, takes 5 mins to put them back on.

And yes, 6" lift and 35's can be legal....depending on state.
If its engineered and legal........no matter what state your traveling through, they can't (or shouldn't) defect you, because its legal in your state of registration.
there was a big debate about this a while ago...
thats what i used to think but apparently your truck needs to comply with the rules of the state or territory you are driving in also..
their state their rules

what do your patrol would look like after hitting a sheep at 110k? and do you think you could maintain control of it after the impact?steve patrol wrote:Isn't that why god invented the bull bar ?NutterGQ Wrote:

It would be covered in sheep blood ! Its just like hitting a speed bump.
Roo's on the front of my bull bar are a common occurance, no dings, bends, just hair and blood. No different to a stock truck in stead you drive over the roo rather than it ending up through your windscreen.
Ive heard that the transport is going federal next Jan so no more state wide bull shit. Im in QLD and mine has been federaly engineered and passed with a 4" sus and 2" body with 35's. So legally its all good!
Find an enginner in your area and speak to them about what you can do before you do anything, a bottle of rum always helps too!
When driving a lifted truck, dont go flat out untill you learn how it handles. Ive seen mini vans with no lift or mods roll over at 70kph and I can go round that same corner at 80kph no dramas. My point is that there is a lot more unsafe/unstable vehicles out there than a lifted patrol.
I say go for it if your going to use it, if your doing it for looks then I hope they lock you up with big bad bobby and his 12" pool cue !

i'm sure the issue with shops not wanting to lift a car 6" is not a warranty concern.
Its more one of when the roads auth/police come knocking on their door cos you've killed yourself/someone else because (no matter what you say) your 6" lifted/35" tyred truck handles so badly and you lost control, its THE SHOP owners ass on the line as they fitted an illegal kit that made the vehicle unroadworthy.
You might think it handles like a sports car, (and hey, maybe it does, what do i know?) BUT anything over 50mm in lift or more than 1/3 increase in wheel travel, more than 15mm increase in trye diameter, and wheel spacers are illegal in most states.
So most shops are fairly hesitant to go outside this, particularly if you dont want to stump up the thousands of $$ to get it engineered.
PS. 6" of lift and 35's looks great. Go for it, bugger the legalities.

I disagree. My truck has no swaybars, 3" lift (but more like 4" due to light wieght) 2" body lift and is on 35 ET's and it handles a lot better than my 96 GQ LWB with 2" OME kit (new) on 33 radials and both swaybars. I mean a lot better.j-top paj wrote:couldnt agree more... its just not safe to run without sway bars and have a lifted truck. plus what happens when you have an acco? your screwedjessie928 wrote:i would NOT run a lifted or standard coil sprung truck without stabilizers fitted on the road.

The difference is the winch truck has cost about 3x as much to build and has had some serious work done to the suspension.
So if the job is done right, then it is fine but $4K does not get the job done right. Double it might be right.
