For some friends who are crossing the Simpson, what is a good AT for sand use?

I don't want to recommend off my own bat because I simply don't know.

Cooper STT's (not armortek type) go great on sand and long bitumen drives...

get mud terrains we did a trip to birdsville then through the simpson people with us all had problems with all terrains we had muds and didnt even get a flat
hope this helps as its comming from experience

That would make a type of sense to me but these folk don't go offroad real often so the muddies would seem a bit extreem to them.

best bet is to ring some of the tag-a-long tourers and see what they run and recommend, theyre the ones that do it all the time and will know what works out there...

when i rung around the tagalong mobs for dad when he was buying his tyres, i think they all sorta suggested the coopers or the new mickeys, coopers were a butt load cheaper, so we went with them.
they wernt keen to recommend anything, as they cant be seen to be biased for whatever blah blah, but yes, it is the best advice :)

Desert Duellers are a popular choice among SA based outback travellers. Arkaroola run them on their station vehicles, and they only stock Bridgestone in their workshop.

Innamincka mechanic stocks Toyo OPATs (last time I looked...)

When I was at Mt Dare all their vehicles were wearing Cooper STTs or ST/Cs (same compound.) The worker I spoke to said they haven't found anything else which lasts as well.

I've had a good run with my S/Ts, MTRs and now STTs. I think they've all been good on bitumen, and no complaints off-road either. The S/Ts were the best wearing, by a long shot.

Personally, I don't think I'll ever buy "A/Ts" for off-road use.

I told them that Cooper STs will be heaps tuff enough but aren't the nicest on road (especially on a spanking new Prado).

I also told them that BFG ATs aren't renowned for tuffness like Coopers but they are surely tuff enough and will behave better on road for the other 99% of the time.

Choice is theirs now, thanks for the replies :D

whats wrong with the cooper s/t on road? just dont wind the window down and you wouldnt know the difference....

Haven't tried them but I leant a mate my BFGs for a Melb to Adelaide return trip recently.

He was pleasently surprised with the smoothness and the better fuel economy. So I formed an opinion based on his feedback ;)

i get better economy with cooper s/t 35's than i do with goodride and bridgestone 31" split rims, go figure

Cat... pigeons.. you get the idea.

Pro Comp A/T's... probably the xtreme 3 ply version over the other.

I have no personal experience, but i know Darren McCrae recommends these and stipulates no BFG and sometimes no Coopers on his trips due to sidewall strength issues.

Maybe even the mickey thompson ATZ/MTX could be worth looking at.

Crossed the Simo in 2007 with Mickey Thompson MTZ and didn't have any problems with them, just make sure you let any tyre down to the right pressure and you won't any problems

Yep- 12psi in an unladen hilux and they had no probs at all going around Beachport.

16psi the did tend to dig in a little bit, and i was down to 8psi to get off a bottomless boggy beach!

I found mine at 14psi dug into the sand more than the MTR's on another hilux did. Sounds like i should have dropped a few more psi out.

The trick is to find the right pressure. The more aggressive the tyre, the more likely it will bite (and therefore dig) so the more important it is to find the right pressure - which is generally lower.
