Speedo troubles.

Post by rustyvit »

For some time now the vitara speedo has been intermittently playing up, occasionally on cold mornings it will start growling and the needle starts flickering violently until it runs off the clock and the needle pops off, sometimes I can catch it by slowing down and the growling stops and thats the end of it until next time.

So Iv'e had the speedo out aheap of times, put the needle back on and off I go until next time which may be many months.

Now its almost constant, dropped the needle and growling all the time. Its gota be the magnetic drum thats shat the stick, has anyone experienced this before?

It's a 91 4door efi

and in the midwest.

I will be interested to crack open that magnetic drum, it sure makes some noise ( when it wants to)

pull the cluster out, spray some wd 40 and put some light weight oil on the back of the head where the cable goes in, let it soak for 10 mins and put it back.
Fixes about 60% of them if not replace the cluster, also check that your speedo cable has the rubber gasket between the cable outer and transfer where it threads on, that can also cause a simmilar problem, only seen one do this before, the cable pushes too hard into the speedo head placing too much pressure creating drag.

99.9% you have a Tiger in there.. growl growl

1% headcluster speedo unit..

My vitara cluster unit (in a sierra with baleno gauges), the needle floats when doing slow speed's. Dont know why either.. But no growling

Cheers, have given that a go, I was reluctant to lubricate it as I did that once before and it stuffed that speedo. If I wasn't such a tight ar$e I would go a buy another unit, but I'm going to exhaust all option first.

So far the WD40 is doing the trick, stand by.
