80 Series Poor Power Steering. Pump or box?

Post by Surfin Alec »

Hi all,

My 97 TD's power steering has been getting worse over time, to now its almost not working at all at low speeds. (I got 33's).

Only leek/symptom I got is my resovoir weeps slowly from the lid. I have checked the seal and it looks ok, I even bent down the tabs on the lid to get it to seal tighter, replaced the hose clamps etc but still it weeps. Its almost as if it may get some pressure in the resovoir to make it weep. Could this be related?
I have no leaks from the PS pump or at the box?

Any ideas welcomed....

If it's not giving you any assitance at low engine and vehicle speed the pump will be worn not dellivering full pressure you can get them tested in car. The weep around the filler cap could be the resivior building up pressure or maybe just try a new seal.
plenty of parts on the bench

Hey Alec, had similar issue with very heavy steering (not with the reservoir tho :? ) and was the pump.
Replaced it with a 2nd hand pump and has been fine since.

Thanks guys, I rekon you might be onto something Doug and just replace the pump with a 2nd hand job. Then if needed I can re-build my old one, one day.

The resivour also has a filter in it witch can get blocked and restict flow as mine did.
I bent the tabs back and pulled the cover off to get to the filter screen and found it was very blocked. Also helped stop the leaking from around the top part as I reclamped it tighter over the o-ring.
