More Sierra woes
as per my previous thread, i'm having more trouble with the sierra, I think it needs a carby rebuild but i'll ask first.
it still idles bad, but lately its been hunting at low revs and today i was on the way home from a play and it wouldnt hold a constant throttle, it just dies, if i give it a bootful it splutters for about half a second then revs quite happy,
any ideas guys?

I had a problem like that a couple of years ago- I thought it was the carby straight away. When I was cruising on the open highway at 90 to 100kmh, sometimes out of the blue, my car would loose all power and drive really rough (sometimes stalling) for a short time, then it would be ok after that. With my car, it actually wasn't the carby, it was the distributer. Maybe that could be a possibility with yours too?

Checked the fuel filter? Could be blocked or as said earlier it could be the dissy or leads and as you've said even carby. Have you tried putting your hand over the top of carby when its at a few revs to try and suck through any crap that could be in the fuel bowl?

On mine it would start and idle fine in my dirveway but as soon as i took it for a drive it wouldnt idle, would run like crap at low rev's and stall etc. My problem was my charcol canister had water in it and the fuel tank wasnt breathing so i was getting a vacuum back into my fuel tank pulling the fuel out of my carby, it had me scratching my head for ages untill my old mans mate said take it for a drive with the fuel cap off and it run fine. I blew the charcol canister out with compressed air, put it back and havnt had a problem since.

I had similar issue with carby turned out the bushes were gone for the butterflies you can check for movement your self. Mine would be okay one day, bad the next or shut down on full revs then not idle and only work on full revs. THere was so much play that it was jamming up sometimes.

I currently have the same problem
Its been like it for a long time and through that ive had the carby rebuilt and still does it so i might have to try new leads, plugs, coil, rotor button and rotor cap.
Anything else it could be??
Im going to try and do one thing at a time so i can pin-point the problem.

I think i have the solution to all your probs !
take the car for a drive with the fuel cap off (obviously not with a full tank) if the car stops running like crrap then the problem is in your emmissions system.
When the charcoal canister or adjoining lines is blocked then this causes the fuel tank to pressurize and makes your car run puss.
To fix this problem blow out all hoses leading to and coming out of the charcoal cannister with high pressure air or alternatively replace the part of the emission system that is blocked.
i have been through it all before with a mate went through like 3-4 carbys, timing, blah, blah, blah

but mine is an intermittent problem as it can be fine then after wheeling it stuffs up and wont idle and runs like a pig
And i always have to de-press the accelerator three times give it a kick in the guts then it starts no problem.
Unless its sat for a while then its take about 2mins of cracking and pumping for it to start.

mine also has a temporary plastic fuel cap on it, would it still pressurize?
Same problem with mine, anyway the screen got smashed yesterday so now thats another thing to fix, anyone wanna buy a cheap sierra??

ok, some easy fixes, im still relatively new to the sierras, but ive had all sorts of troubles so im almost well versed in the little buggers
1: change your fuel filter, pour some metho into the fuel tank, say a cup roughly, leave the cap off and run it for a bit. a short drive should suffice, whack the cap back on. if there is a heap of crap in your tank or lines, it will go better for a little while, but start doing it again, so either more metho, or clean ya tank and lines out along with yet another filter.

4: plug gaps, leads

When my zook was running the original carby I ended up having bad idle etc and found it to be the throttle shaft had flogged out and was creating a vacuum leak. I've your car does it over bumps and potholes etc it could possibly be high float level? I've heard of that being the case on webers but not on stock carbies tho.
