the cheapest and best decision depends on if you can get a bargain or not.
i got 2 rangie 3.5 v8s for $450 complete so that's what i went with. certainly not a standard conversion but anything is possible.
if you've got a line onto an engine and the price is right, GO FOR IT. more power is good. 8)
lpg can be run with a carby and doesn't stall on angles.

Dtzook, yes the 1.3L EFI out of the jimny bolts straight in, no adaptors required at all. However u would be pretty lucky to get one for under $1000.

Am putting gti motor in my 88 swb zook the mods i know of are the right angle dizzy adapter, changing the top inlet for the radiator, wiring in the computer etc, might need a body lift to fit the engine under the bonnet. If anybody has more details let me now as it would help me when i drop mine in.Oh youll need a high pressure fuel pump as well to feed the fuel injection.cheers!

How'd you go fitting the 3.5V8 under the bonnet?

Giving this some thought.
Benefits:
Bolts in
injection
cheap
more power
better engine braking
injection
more torque
injection
Problems:
ahmm...I aint got one
Also the GTI motor is supposedly tougher than even the 1.3 .. the pistons have oil sprays under them, the crank is tougher (not that normal Zuk cranks are known to break) the conrods are stronger etc .. They can alos sustain high revs for an extended period. Also the other thing is that the GTI computer can be chipped to allow cam mods etc or even forced induction if you feel the need.
You do need to be a bit more careful with the timing belt tho as from memory they are an interfearance motor, so ifa belt goes at full noise in a bog hole .. it becomes a big alloy lump of rubbish ...

Kermit has been running them for years, If you have a motor with a perticular power curve and gear the vehicle to suit then it can work well.
I think a lot of guys where put off the motor because of conversions previous to rockhoppers , Without gearing these things would be a bit of a night mare, With gearing i think it would be fine .
Injection is good for angles ect but a couple of things could be a pita , if
you havn't got super low gearing and have a habit of getting below idle revs you could find the knock sensor shutting you down prematurley.

As Gerg runs a motor almost litterally half this size to pretty reasonable effect with the correct gearing for the engines power curve (6:1 hopper and 5.13's with stuff all vehicle weight) I would say it can be made work very well ...

Yep - it's all about the gearing fellas
My monster engine works a treat - and the whole car seems to perform very nicely due to its low gearing and the fact that the car is very light.
I tend to drive most tricky sections in the car at between 1000 and 2000rpm - which is still pretty slow in the car
However, definately if it wasn't running so much gearing it would be pretty crap to drive - just like running a 1.3L sierra engine with bigger tyres i guess.

I have the gti engine in mine and have had for sometime now and i am also running a rockhopper.
I ditched the 1300 block in favour for an imported 1500 block and it was a little better.
Now its turbo charged so its pretty god.
Although, if i went to do it all over again i would go for a vitara 16v 1600 efi engine. The gti engine is all about revs and the vitara engine is all about torque.
The gti is terrible on the highway cause of this lack of torque and also uses heaps of fuel for a worse result that a vitara 1600.

Its the import 1500 one and well it bolted up to the gearbox using one of those flash adaptor kits so i would have to say 1600 block would be the same.
Was a reasonably easy install, same mods a fitting a 1600
