I think the second letter thing being country of origin is a myth; all landcruisers are *J##, but say hiluxes for example are still japanese but are all N for the model. second leter is "model" designation by toyota, as dumbdunce says. corolla is "E" camry is "V" rav4 is "A" corona is "T" cressida is "X" crown is "S" dyna is "U" or "Y" ....etc. etc.
