hj60 front brake upgrade

i have been reading alot about what to put on the front of a 60 series to get it to stop. from what i can work out V6 4 runner calipers and a 80 series master cylinder. now the question is what year 4 runner should i be looking for and should i change the master cylinder only or the booster aswell. i now the master has to come from a drum brake rear 80 series. if anyone could help with this one that would be great.

Unless your current rotors,master cylinder etc are stuffed, don't bother with the swap.I have done 2 now with friends and It gives a slightly better feel to the pedal but the stopping power isn't noticable(stopping in shorter distance etc).

You can upgrade, but it ain't really worthwhile, I would just make what you have a little better.

The V6 calipers your after are '93. Larger pistons.

Don't think there's such thing as a drum brake rear 80 series.

I use an FJ80 master and booster with 4runner calipers (35mm, as opposed to 45mm v6 'runner ones which are obviously better again) and standard rear drums on my HJ75 - was a huge improvement over the old brakes but i think they were getting past their used-by (Having said that my heavy Troopy on 37's stops just as well, if not better than my old mans completely stock HJ75 ute - pedal feel is better too)

Cheers, the 1990 80 series with the poverty pack and 3F had drums on the rear.

my 60 series will lock all 4 33x12.5's on dry bitumen. Why would you need to upgrade?

If they arent stopping your vehicle adequately, try some maintenance first.

The 35mm piston callipers are std 1990 plus hilux/75 series. They have 2 pistons larger than the std 22/35 60 series calliper, plus the pad is longer...you dont need to change master and/or booster for them however the v6 4runner or surf calliper (any year) runs 4x45mm pistons....now they need a 80 booster and master. All i can say is this combo used to flatten my front ARB springs on my old hj60..i ended up putting 2 extra leafs in them....dont know why the others have had mixed results, unless an 80 master has been bolted to a 60 booster.

YEP! Real early pov pack can have drums on the back, unless it was delivered to a mine.

Just do soem maintenance on your existing brakes, they work good enough on most 60s.

Even going to HZJ calipers made a big difference to my HJ75 with 33x12.5 x15 especially when it's got a heavy load on it. Bigger pad and 2 large pistons, better clamping effect. The bigger pistons and pad in the 4 runner, better again. cheers
