Looking for a 4x4
Hey all
I want to get a 4wd however budget is a major restraint.... I also want to be able to get one under $3000. Does anyone have some suggestions as to what cars to look for? I am living in Brisbane and am wondering what the regulations are with fixing up cars that aren’t road worthy/written off? I assume that cars bought from wreakers cannot be restored correct?

sierra are more capable with the live axle in the front but are very slow and topple over much easier than a vitara..

mine is a 94 got it stock standard nearly 2 years ago, not one dent or scratch on it interior imaculate with a year rego for $2500
now lifted, 31's, welded diff, and not one straight panel and now interior is um like mostly gone due to flooding in big mud pools(putting in a bilge pump soon taking it off my boat)-lots of fun

Any patrols or cruisers around the $2k mark that need "a bit of fixing up" are most likely going to put you over your $3k budget. Rock monkey makes a good point about the Hilux/4Runners. They're almost unbreakable, parts are easily had too, and they come in a variety of configurations. The 2l/3L motors would have to be the slowest cars i have ever been in though. Your top speed will be two digits.

if your budget is 3g , id recommend a sierra if sole purpose is for offroading, if its an everyday car with some offroadin and some beach work then definately a GQ, a comfortable car for everyday use, plenty of storage for the trips up the beach, and certainly capable offroad, reliable too. when searchin dont forget too look for mavs too, normally a bit cheaper.

I have seen one or two Hilux's do some pretty hairy stuff - mainly due to the zero care factor of the drivers though.
