My petrol 80 series (4.5 litre) has lost compresion on cylinder 3 (10psi) all the others 175-180. I would say it valve related. haven't checked the clearences yet. but i will! How much to reco a 4.5 head for gas, stainless valves? if i wanted to patch it. (might have a hole in piston yet!!!)
Seriously thinking about a V8 conversion, probably the holden efi V8. I want a neat engineered job with A/c and everything working as i plan to do a few k's around oz.
Just after any opinions i was thinking the Holden 5lt would probably be the cheapest option (rather than chev gen3/ls2)and i'm familar with the holden. Was also thinking V8 might be better on fuel the the old 4.5 (30litres gas to 100ks or 20litres of petrol to 100ks at best(runing 35's).
Any ideas, thanks

80 series Holden or Chev conversions?

I run a holden V8 with a Scat 355 stroker kit, early heads & straight gas (twin lines & convertors), works well and makes heaps of power too.
I get 16.5 ltrs per 100 km when cruising around town and offroad in low range I average 18-20 ltrs per 100km.
Its in a Surf running 5 speed, 4.88's & 35's

About 90 per cent sure i want to put Holden V8 5lt in. Cheapest fuel injected. But just checked the specs on the old 4.5 158kW@ 4600 and 379Nm @3200. Clearly little concerned about the torque figure! Not sure but think i would need a stroker motor to get those torque figures!
I think a standard 5lt would only be making 300Nm odd and fairly high in the rev
Think i'll need towing cam at least, if not a stroker.
I was hoping for better power and at the same economy, any ideas?

Hey mate, Don't bother with the 5L, go the LS1. Much better motore, better power, more tunable, etc. Have done several jobs where people have removed the 5L to fit the LS1, and they say there is no comparison, Much nicer to drive and plenty more grunt. Should only be a couple Grand more at most. Ls1's are gettin fairly cheap now.
