Karman Vortex AFM

The Air flow meter on my Paj is not reading correctly, especially at higher revs/flow. Is it possible to clean these type of AFM as it is with a hotwire type or should i just get a changeover one?

usually Throttle body/carby cleaner will do it without damaging the wires.

Yeah i know how to clean it. Its just that my understanding of a Karman Vortex AFM is that it sends out a beam of light rather than a hotwire with resistance, where if the hotwire is dirty it will read incorrectly. So i guess my question is, can a Karman Vortex AFM be cleaned or is it more likely a problem with the sensor or circuitry?

dont mind me i missed a bit lol, electric contact cleaner on the 2 plates, but it may need a few hours to dry up, and their easy to fruck up.

Experience in the 1UZ (Lexus V8) fraternity is cleaning them kills them.

Tr swapping with anohter Paj owner and see if it helps.

They are extremely reliable.

You can get a MAP to Vortex converter so you can still run the stock ECU without the KV sensor.

Cheers. Gave it a clean with Contact cleaner today and put it back in and it's running a lot smoother. I've got my torque back and it also allowed me to run a few degrees more of timing without detonation. It must have been running quite lean.

BTW they use ultrasound to measure the air disturbance created by a baffle plate ( or plates ) in the airstream ... i.e the vortex.

As there is a relationship between the vortex created and air flow - measurement is possible.
( usual disclaimers )

It seemed like a much better idea when I started it than it does now.

A few days after cleaning i had the same problem, got a 2nd hand one just to test and it ran 100%. Again after a day or 2 the surging has come back. I run an oiled finer filter. Is it possible that the oil is fouling the meter?

yes. to much oil on those filters = bad
