Toyota OEM vs Aftermarket fan clutch w/ pics (for 105)

Post by me3@neuralfibre.com »

Tonka from LCOOL - figured it might be of interest to some of you guys.

I writing a doc at the moment on the Toyota OEM fan clutch. Found some interesting results.

The factory clutch is marked "Aisin"

Whilst I was at it I stripped the aftermarket Australian brand name fan clutch that I had bought as my first replacement for the cruiser early in the overheating saga. The difference was staggering.

The OEM clutch was larger, weighed more, held 3x or more fluid, had 8 coupling rings instead of 1, had thicker fluid, was adjustable, and a more staged valve operation.

If your OEM one isn't leaking or has stuffed bearings, keep it. More fluid and tune it, but dont replace it with an aftermarket. If you have an aftermarket unit and overheating, try and find an OEM unit.

Interesting, I guess that is why the factory ones are so expensive. Those studs that the fan bolt to, are they replaceable at all? The reason I ask is that I just snapped one of those when putting the fan back on. It is a factory clutch but out of a 60 series. I don't know why I bother doing stuff myself sometimes.

Cheers

I don't see a "bottom" of the thread. Drill and tap maybe.

Thanks. I will take it to the local mechanic and see if he can fix my mess.

Stuff that - go to the wreckers and pick one up.
It'll be cheaper.
