GU 2 door, no lift, need new tires...
GU 2 door, no lift, need new tires...
Hey all,
Rather than investing in a Land Rover again, I decided to go for the Patrol GU 2002, with the 4.5 carb (petrol cheap in KSA), and no electrics...
Anyways, after only 12,000 km, the original tires, 235/80 Bridgestone HT are badly worn to my dissappointment ( ), therefore they are to be replaced with something more to my likings for the desert here.
The wheels are the original 6x16. I have no idea what offset they have, but was wondering if I can go with 8.25x16 XS or 255/85 R16 without any lift. There are no flares on it.
I need this truck to remain stock for the time being, until I finish the Disco.
Thanks for all the input...

over here the GU's have 8x16 wheels with 265 70 16 [265 75 16 on the ute] and plenty of guys use 285 75 16 with minimal rubbing on full compression.
this is on wagons though so if your talking about a SWB we dont get them in australia and cant tell you if they fit.

According to Nissan, there isnt enough market here for them.. The price wouldnt be that much different to the LWB, so they figure most would go with the long wheel base...
I actually had a mail session going with Nissan on this as I wanted one!! They have zero chance of importing them, even in small numbers.

In Saudi, the bone-stock SWB seels for ~6,000 $ US less than its LWB counterpart, so that is a considerable amount...
I for one did not like the ~117" wheelbase of the LWB, with prior experience with my 100" Discovery WB, I wanted something around that, and the Patrol SWB is great for that.
It is a shame that you guys cannot get any, i can only imagine what you can do with it!!!
I plan on modifying it in a year's time, so will be looking onto your expertise, advice and help...so start packing them up...

Well, since I will be modifying it soon, what do you guys recommend I do?
Tires, lift, gearing, lockers, bumpers, winches...??? which ones, and why?
Thanks

Well Disco, before we offer advice on setup for your machine, tell us what the terrain is like over there.
Obviously we would imagine it to be big bloody sand dunes with oil rigs to dodge between but like anywhere one setup won't be ideal for
all types of terrain
Cheezy would vouch for this as his rig is almost one of a kind when compared to other competition rigs in Victoria. This is explained by the fact that he prefers rocks to drive on but Victoria is full of mud.
Totally different conditions require different approaches.
Tell us what its like over there and we will give you a HEAP of ideas!!

Well, In Saudi, its 90% sand and 10% rocks, so most probably any AT tire in 37" form will do that trick, or I will go with the 37 MTR as an all rounder...
I like ARB products, so that is the way I would go, also OME, Warn, the usual good stuff...
I would love to do anything radical to tell you the truth, so shoot ideas, i'm all eyes!

Hi Dino,
I just realised that in your first post in this thread you used the words 'invest' and 'Rover' in the same sentance. Are you on drugs? Just kidding!
Do the NZ GU shorties come in diesel? Me thinks that a TD 3.0 would rock!

2car...yeah, I actually said that...well, I will not comment on that, since it will backfire on me...
The GU SWB does come in diesel, but living in Saudi, petrol is way cheaper, and the diesel they have here is not "clean" enough for small engines, so I decided to go for the 4.5 carb.
