Upcoming timing belt change - what to ask for?

I am about to get my timing belt done and want to know if there is anything else i should be getting done at the same time.

Make sure they do the tensioner at the same time

Genuine crank and camshaft seals. And all bearings/tensioner.

If it's only it's first belt (100,000k's) just do the belt.

if it's up for it's second (200,000k's) do a T - Belt Kit comes with tensioner, idler pulley and seals, but as already said use genuine seals the aftermarket ones leak, and yea also replace the water pump.

The second one always cost more! i'm almost due for a third!!!

Sorry but I would do the full kit and pump even on the first 100,000km. I've rarely seen a water pump go a full 200K without leaking. Same goes for oil seals and pulleys. Do it all and save yourself the hassle (and labour if you're paying someone) of doing it again for another 100,000km.

That's fair enough.

If you where doing it buy the logbook or most repair manuals/guides the belt only needs doing on the first hundered. and there is a big difference in price between fitting just a belt and doing a kit and pump as well.

I Have seen many water pumps go well over 200,000k's and rarely see any needing replacement under 100,000k's maybe on well neglected vehicles.

But each to there own and maybe we work on different vehicles was just giving an opinion and advice.

hmmm, im about to hit 300 and have no idea whats been done before, so i better do the lot and know its done.

how hard is it to do it your self and keep the timing etc the same?

Its pretty easy, I did my first one in a day with a lot of buggering around. Just need to line up all the timing and your sweet.
It took me a few goes to get it spot on, as sometimes the teeth of the belt dont sit properly in the pulley and it skips a tooth. You just manually turn the engine over and make sure they still line up.

Definately do all the seals and tensioner/bearings while its all out. You'll need a puller to get the balancer off though.

Have a shot at it and save a coupla hundred bucks.

There not that tricky. If your a little unsure jsut grab a haynes/gregory repair manual it's all step by step with pics e.t.c
pulleys can be a bit of a pain sometimes specailly the crank gear.
But it'll defs save you some cash!

with my lux i did the idler/tensioner arrangement , pump , seals and belt wile i was there , then you dont have to remove that bloody cover for another 100,000 kms , oh what a feeling. btw... as for 200k on a waterpump... my current cruiser has been in the family since new.. 389K still same pump... not leaking. (touches wood)

What torque? Tighten it till it strips and then back it off half a turn.

ive had 2 '3L's now. Both spat the crankshaft seal at 295,000 and 297,000. Ive also had a mates throw his at 302,000. Hopefully this is enough indication for you guys.

YOU ARE STUPID not to change the timing belt at least everytime you have the cover off. they are the most important part of your car. 200,000 change overs do your camshaft, crankshaft seals, water pump, and idler and pulley bearings.

Why half ass it?

With the hilux 3l kit's i have fitted they haven't come with the idler only the tensioner and so on. you can however change just the bearing in it which any bearing shop will have.
plenty of parts on the bench
