Hey all I have always been rather involved in camping and 4WDing. However I have never owned my own vehicle. I'm just about 21 and am about to buy my first zook.
I want to buy a stock standard car and do it up myself and what I cant do pay for it to be done.
Now to the point of the thread what would be the first thing you would do to a stock zook to make it a worth while off road machine. My first thoughts were to lift it and put some 31's on it or something like that. But what are everyone else's thoughts. What kind of lift what size/brand/type of tires.
For the second part. What sort of price should I be looking at to pay for a good condition stock zook. Keeping in mind I live in Australia.
the first thing you should do is drive it... just drive it everywhere for like, 3 months at least. once you've mastered driving it stock in all conditions you'll know what needs doing next based on the tracks you're doing and how much road/offroad you do etc.
Just buy one, and learn to drive it. Zooks are not like anything you have driven before, Learn to drive it first,then modify it if you want.If you want to put anything in put a rollbar in first.

Thanks for the reply. The car is being bought purely as a 4WD any driving it does will be to camp sites and tracks. I have also got plenty of experience 4WDing.
With that in mind would you recommend doing some easier tracks in a stock zook to work out what needs to be done?

Good condition stock zook, too broad a question. Do you want a Sierra, Vitara, Jimny, Grand Vitara, LJ........? and each of these have different variations as well.
Wheeling on completely wicked angles, without even looking stable.

Cheers thanks for the reply. I have always been told that the Sierras are the way to go (tough as nails and are easy to mod + they are rather cheap) I was thinking a 1988 - 1994 models. I have been told that later have coils and that makes it a little harder to mod. Cheers

So that would likely be a Short wheel base Wide Track Sierra then (sold from late '88 to early '96).
A good standard one should be able to be had for around $3000.
Do not expect show room condition of course, just a sound vehicle.

Once you have done that, I would highly recommend having a read of this:

Yup I want a SWB (i like the way they look ) Yeh im not looking for anything waxed up with pretty paint. I just want it in good mechanical condition. I want to do all the mods myself gives me a sense of it being my car and will make successful 4WDing more satisfying.
