What to look for when buying a 2000 Range Rover.

Post by Devious »

Heyyas.

I have a mate looking at buying a 2000 model Range Rover, They one he is looking at has the V8 in it.

He wants me to check it out for him as im a mechanic but I have never had anything to do with rangies!

It is a stock luxo barge and really clean, and he only wants it as a nice 'cruiser' you could say, he has no interest in getting it dirty.

I am not sure on how many kays it has, but if any of you guys could point me in the right direction on what to look for as potential drams, that would be great.

My advice is simple...don't look at it.

The BEST option is to tell your mate to take it to a reputable and experienced Land Rover Specialist for a pre-purchase inspection. They will know the intricacies of it and know what to look for.

Fred Smith in Bayswater will do an inspection, I think for $250 or so.

He is not a huge P38 fan but he knows them reasonably well.

They are an enthusiast's car and if he wants to drive it and not get familiar with its ins and outs then I don't believe it's a good choice.

I would budget approximately $1500 for an update of the EAS system straight up, maybe it's all been done recently but probably it hasn't. New airbags, overhaul of the valve block, and other possible bits and pieces.
This is not legal advice.

common items to go

-HVAC motors (requires dash to be pulled apart)
-valve block (for air suspension)
-air compressor (it has a plastic piston)
-air bags

otherwise clean, well looked after example with a 4.6 is a really nice car

What about the slipped liners
Surely that is the key thing to look for.

Not really. If you buy the car then only later find out its got slipped liners, rather than spend up to get the 4.6 fixed you can con the missus into getting a gen 3 put in

After all they cost the same :lilangel:
