R series from 3lt surf identification

Post by leehamescort »

Bought a low km R series and am 3/4 through putting it into my surf, I was told it was from a 3 litre surf but the box only has one gearshift hole (doesnt have the hole for the transfercase lever in the gearbox housing). Did the 3lt have a topshift transfercase?

i thought all chaindrive transfers where forward shift?

It doesnt effect me other than a small centre console modification as i'm running twin gear driven top shift transfers so i wasn't using the transfer case lever hole in the gearbox anyway.

my thought is it might be a supra box??

cheers

Yeah, I think no more topshift cases after late 80s or so in surfs / 4runners.

Was there an electric 4wd setup in surfs at some stage that meant push button low range activation rather than the traditional mechanical lever?

Yep you got me with that one, I assumed all surfs had the electric 4wd button on the low range selector which is still a top shift selector,
Ive also got the r series in my runna behind a 2.8 diesel, and that is what that is ADD it came from a 1994 surf

Hey Leehamescort your rear end has a disc conversion correct? could you lend some info to a fellow runna owner?

Looks like there are two differnent boxes on the surfs/V6 runners, some with a topshift version of the chaindrive transfer.

Jaronimo,
I run a 60 series rear diff now, but the brake conversion is similar.
Its just the subaru caliper conversion so as to keep a cable handbrake with hilux vented front rotors and a flat 8mm mounting plate to suit. Its a very easy conversion.
