Stock 100 series - Cape worthy?

Post by lump_a_charcoal »

G'day all -

We will be buying the father in-law's 100 series (Sahara, TD, I think about 04/05 model) in may, and I was wondering if they are capable in stock form of doing the Cape, or heading up to Darwin through the middle?

It is stock, and has probably never been off road...

I was thinking a bullbar with winch plus a 2-3 inch lift would probably suffice, it has a fridge and drawer setup already...

So, would it be OK on trips like these or would it struggle?

THanks.

Of course, how could I forget that!

It has done about 130000kms, I am guessing that $25000 is a good price?

All the things you suggest will get you there without trouble so long as you don't want to get to serious and depending on the condition of the roads at the time. Carry an extra spare and some basic tools.

The cape ??
the cape can be so different from week to week season to season
it depends on what you want to do there and where you want to go there

i have been up plenty of times and know for a fact that you could take a camry to the very tip as long as you dont go early in the season and dont go off side tracks

but thats why i go to do the side tracks and hard stuff

a stock hundred series with a 2 inch lift, snorkle and a winch will be able to do 95% of the stuff no problems
depending on your lack of regard for panel damage a lot more!!!

just be weary of the front CV boots tearing
reversing out of creeks (breaking front diffs)

also check your lower control arms for cracking before and during your journey

get some good tyres!!!!!! (NOT THE STOCKERS)

cheers

If it is an 04/05 model and you don't buy it for that price, send it my way, that would have to be around $10k cheaper then what it's worth.

UPDATE

Well we finally got it - It has actually done about 170,000kms, but we got it for $19000 so I'm not complaining!

Now trying to work out how to plumb a reverse camera into the navigation screen... Any tips?

strongly suggest tyres mate. Atleast a good set of Allterrains but prob set of radial muddies like stt coopers or mickey t mtz just because it is so unpredictable out them dirt roads turn to slush real quick and theres alot of sharp rocks.... Just my opinion though and i think youre pretty spot on with what else you suggested for your truck...

well its the dry season now so dont worry to much about slushy roads, only mud u will see now is creek crossings. a stock 100 series will get u up to the tip easy.

i would get:

tires
snorkel
lift
winch
basic recovery gear (snap strap, tree protector, shaklets and a winch extension strap helps)

Yeah I am leaning towards the ARB winch bar for the front, but haven't found one that I can afford for the rear...

Tyres are fine (BFG ATs).

Doesnt it already have ride height adjustment? (4" lift at the push of a button) self disconnecting sway bars. Traction control = to lockers. And all that jazz??? I would NOT be touching the suspension if it does. Some bigger tyres and a winch is all it needs. Oh and snorkle.

Is it the 4.7 or the 5.7 engine? Id be going right through it and cleaning up any potensial water problems. Silicone the leads etc...

It is a TD4.2, whether DRS is on crack on not...

As for the ride height jazz, I don't think it does - Can't find any mention of it in the manual, nor can I find said button.

It is most definitely a Sahara...

What would a 3 inch exhaust cost roughly?
