hey i have a 91 gq patrol diesel 4.2 i sucked in a fair bit of water on the weekend, it never stalled but still runs, it has losted power is there anything i should do before i keep driving it

replace your engine then keep driving it :) is it blowing any whitey blue smoke?

I'd be taking it to get the motor inspected.
if its had a gut full of water, you could have done all sorts of damage, like bent rods, specially fi you have lost power.

Is it running rough??

Bent rod/s.... checking the compression MAY give you an idea. If one or more is/are noticibly low, theres your problem.... doubt you've got away with no damage, especially with the loss of power being obvious....

#4 rod will be bent. This is the exact same symptoms my engine had.

Rings were also shagged on the same cylinder.

I went and got a new motor.

yes, its lower in the manifold than all the other inlets, so the water naturally runs straight into No 4. Built that way by nissan.

I'd second the above post, check the filter, if its got a load of mud in it, it might have blocked it.

Dunno about yours but mine are the same height on all 5 safari's i have, ....but number 4 intake port is directly under the crossover pipe from air filter/turbo, so maybe that's why it gets dosed first???

Yep, garanteed shagged if you say a fair bit of water went in. A tea spoon of water is enough to bend rods. Diesels running very high compression doesnt take much. Its still running but if you listen to the exhaust youll hear a slight pfft sound every now and again. Rebuild time.

AdrainGQ can tell you the costs involved of rebuilding after letting it drink.
But from memory his didnt drink much water and after removing glowplugs and getting the water out it ran.
But the damage was already done. Bent rod and farked head.

Do a compression test and get back to us.

You may be very very lucky.. but the rod on my motor was ever so slightly bent the car still drove exactly the same.

u are lucky, my mate drowned his, drove it home on 5 cylinders after the idiots roll started it full, banana rod, smashed liner which then smashed the block up, dodgey fix, new rod and liner, aparently its running now. lets see if hel seal his snorkel up this time :roll:

Sounds like a good way to remove carbon from the motor ;)
I have found on some old motors that the compression is higher on no4 pot, I can only assume that this is from oil entering the intake through the PCV and dribbling down no4 intake port as it sits under the manifold air intake point, thus carbonating in the cylinder
