Holden 253 conversion for 85 lux
who has done it and how much was it? thinkin i might keep the Hilux G52 box otherwise havta be a trimatic? how hard is it to do? anyone have any pics? will all be done by myself at home.

No problems near water, good set of leads and electronic ignition dizzy and it'll run under water no probs. Mine loves swimming well over the bonnet and doesn't even miss. Did over 50 river crossings last winter up in the high country along crooked river and wonangatta without an issue.crankycruiser wrote:if ya wanna use it near water dont bother...
Wouldnt bother with the G52 box though as it will let you down. upgrade to the R series if you want to stay manual and trouble free.
mine is in a LN130 surf but would be similar. was a very easy conversion. hardest part is sourcing the right harmonic balancer to get all the belts nice and tight to the motor so there is still room for an engine fan to keep it cool.

I just paid $1000 for a R series box with 40,000kms on it supposedly but you can usually get them around $400 or less with more kms on them.
I had a 253 originally and it went well but have put a 308 in the surf now, the 253 sounded awesome and went really well, I picked the 308 up cheap so put it in as it bolted straight in but didn't really need to change. The 308 has a bit more torque down low but otherwise not much different.
A mate of mine has a 253 in his dual cab lux and it goes awesome, been in it for about 4 years now without a hitch.
I run a holley truck avenger carby, thrsty but not 4wding issues.
Originally ran the rochester 4bbr but it used to cough when you hit a big bump or washout.
Running gas solves all 4wding running issues other than lack of fuel availability in the high country.

You'll only be putting your finger back in the plug socket again so to speak. G52's have a glass jaw. If you're cashed up a bit then I'd say look into it before you swap to the G52, sell the bellhousing for the G52 and buy a kit to suit an R150 etc...
You won't break an R series with the V6, you will break a G52 with the V6
Only other downside is the R series have a chain transfer, you'd need an adapter to run the hilux gear driven version if you want reduction gears...

If you dont need massive reduction , the chaindrive transfer already has a lower ratio than the gear driven transfer which may be sufficent.
I think the chain drive is 2.6 reduction compared to 2.1 in the gear driver (better check them though as I'm only going off memory)
