GQ Gear Box

GQ Gear Box
Gday everyone im interested in fitting a gq gear box and transfer into my rover, has any one done it and how much work is involed fitting it ?
I have a nissan 5 speed /LT230 conversion sitting in the shed I've never got around to fitting. And looking at it, and the associated parts I'm guessing you'd be up for.
1. gear box to engine adapter or bellhousing.
2. tail shafts
3. gearbox to chassis mounts.
4. speedo cable
5. body lift
I,d imagine if you were planning on using a nissan gearbox and transfer and keeping the range rover diffs , you would run into rear tailshaft angle problems . Similar to doing the opposite ( ie rover gearbox and nissan diffs ) witch has vibration issues from what I understand.
I'm sure I've missed a lot , but thats a start.
I'll be interested to hear more on this because I'm thinking of replacing my entire driveline with nissan running gear.

Yeah that's mine .
I was going to put it in when I got a front maxi . But that seems a little unlikely now with maxi drive being no more , and the chances of getting a second hand one are buggar all. So I decided to go in a different direction with the entire driveline.

No real reason apart from " why not " . This has been a hotly debated subject for donkeys years. I have nothing against Jack McNamara diffs or the Toyota conversion personally . But if I had to give a black and white answer I think it would be I like the idea of using something standard (ish). What I mean is if I break something out and about the chances of finding / scrounging a replacement is going to be a lot more likely than finding a custom bit. The chances of getting hold of a stock nissan cv or axle is a lot more likely. And repairs would be cheaper , standard stuff isn't that dear.
I realise the initial set up of the conversion will be pricey , but thats the same with anything anyway.
The nissan stuff isn't that dear and provides a little bit of extra width as well.
I like the idea of utilising factory bits no matter what the breed.

The length of the bell housing adapter ring, patrol box ,adapter and LT230 measures out at 1100mm or 43 1/4 inches or 3 ft 7 and a bit , depending on how old you are. Pretty sure you need a minimum of a 2 inch body lift . This kit came out of a Discovery before I got it.

When I put the Trol box in mine I used the Nissan crossmember and made plates to run up the side of the chassis and used the RR bolt holes.
Easy instal once you've made the adaptor (which is quite easy) you need to shorten drive shafts and lift the body as the handbrake drum eats into the floor.

Yep, im pretty pleased with the buy, just gota get it here now! and yeh im very glad ive found a manual that will do the job, with the gen3 going in it was looking more and more likely i would be running a t700 behind it, I dont mind autos but manuals just a little more fun and easier to deal with if something goes wrong(starter or battery failure etc its been a regular thing for me...)
Hopefully it fits in without to many mods, hardest part will probobly be trying to sort out the transfercase selector

Used the Trol transfer and lived with 2WD.
Doesn't seem to affect the handling of my truck so i"ll live with it.
If I drove off road a lot I would do the LT230 adapter.
I adapted the gearbox to my Lexus engine (I know the car is a real bastard) but it required some cutting of the rear floor as the trans brake wanted to live where passenger's feet used to.
Mine shifts better than my LT77 and is twice as strong.
I have no problem using the stongest parts available and to hell with "brand" alleciance.
Go ahead and do it. You'll never be sorry.

Sounds interesting, do you have any pics or bulld up thread etc on your truck? i would love to have a look,,.. I thought about using the lexus motor too, but decided on the gen3 as one came up at the right price. Hopefully i can get some reasonable economy out of it too compared to the old carby motors i have been running..
