Sluggy 3Y, fix or replace??

Post by dans-paj92 »

hey all,
I have a 3Y carby motor in my 1984 4runner.
It has stock 4.88 diff ratios in it.
Have put a new fuel filter and sprayed heaps of carby cleaner in it.
New air filter in it.
Only has done 166000 kms on it. Hasnt been rebuilt though.
Is it worth changing the coil, leads and spark plugs??
Or should i save up and put a bigger and better motor in it?
I am running 35inch muddies on it.
I have a rebuilt 2.4D motor just sitting in another hilux atm.
Is it worth throwing that in and turboing it??
Cheers
Dan

Coming home from yalwal on the weekend, fully loaded with camping gear.
It was doing a max of 120km/h on the highway and 3rd gear 60km/h at 3000rpm coming up mt.uzely or however you spell it??
So will a 2.4TD be any better??
and it would be a max of $3000 for a diff motor to go in and can only be off the road for a week.
Cheers

I have a 3Y gen 1 runner also..
I have trouble getting to 120km/h with only a bit of gear in it running 31's :bad-words:
Doubt the old girl would top 100 with 35's, especially with the speedo discrepancy!!
I've nearly finished the "gathering parts" stage of a 7M-GE conversion
7M-GE = twin cam 3.0 EFI
Spent so far - <$500.00
2" Spring Lift, Custom Rear with Swing-Away Spare, Rear Lokka & Awesome Black Sunnies!!
To-Do list:
Custom Sliders & Tube Winch Bar
2.5 litre Twin Turbo 6cyl Conversion

You wont regret putting the 7m in, my 85 Surf has had this motor for a couple of years now, no issues, heaps more power, uses a little less gas than the 3y did, tows great. Only issue is that for some reason rear tires wear much faster :D

3y...

Post by error »

Its a 3y....
Its not built for speed..
Its an 'A' to 'B' motor, it will get you any where you want, even if you never service it, it will just keep going, just dont ask it to do it quickly..
If you want to go fast get a sports car...
If you want to load up get a B-double..
Just want to play...........

Yeah that's true, they are bulletproof!

I just get tired of filling it up to the tune of $70 every 300-320km

If I'm only gonna get ~300km to a tank I'd like to get places a bit faster!

7M-GE is a Toyota 6
3 litre twin cam EFI
Found in 89-91 Cressidas (MX83) and Supras (MA70)
Not sure how easy to put in but if you google the conversion a fair few people have done it..
Their downfall is they are prone to head gasket failure but that can be overcome by using a better gasket and getting aftermarket head studs and torqueing them up an extra ~15lbf

Yeah i was gonna go a weber carby and a supercharger but stupid RTA rules on P platers.
My one with 35's on her going up hills depending on how big they are..
Did a trip to Colo River out from windsor and there was only one hill that i had to drop down to 2nd and 45km/h. Other than that other steep hills it will hold 3rd at 3000rpm and cruise up them at 60-70km/h, and if im lucky on the odd occasion i can get up hills in 4th at 80km/h.
cheers
Dan.

when you get off ya p plates put a weber carby on it cos at 3000rpm you can nail it and the secondies kick in and just raws up the hill and sound so nice and solid aswell. :D

Hey Tonka,
What weber carb are you running on yours?
I'm thinking of finding a cheap one at a wreckers to use before I begin my conversion..
Also, do you need to run extractors?
Cheers
