What is your budget?

How much actually needs rebuilding? (head replace, pistons, main bearings etc?) or 1 gasket?

What actually needs rebuilding?

Complete new donk is $6k with warranty.

well i wanted to rebuild it totally, get everything done and then do everything i can to try and prevent it from happening again ie. boost controller, oil catch can, blocking the egr etc.

i believe the ones for 6k are just bare motor and then need turbo and pump and all the other shizza. i think!!

Id go the new donk, even if you bought ane exchange unit it doesnt come with ancillaries.

New is always better, we used to fit new 2.6 Astron engine in leiu of recoed units. They were much better & lasted longer.
Don't ask me, ask them. I'm just runnin for my life myself.
Well they are all following you...
No they ain't, I'm just in front...............

Yes, you are right, they are a bare motor but as bogged asked, what really needs replacing?

If your answer is everything in the motor - then I'm with bogged and mkpatrol akso, a total rebuild will be the same if not more than the new motor (when you add the labour).

There are a few members from the patrol 4x4 forum that have rebuilt the motors themselves (replaced the faulty bits) using an in chassis engine rebuild kit from engine australia which worked out relatively cheap (3k including the head).

You should be able to get the injection pump, turbo and aftercooler checked to see if they are ok.

Cheers

Firstly you need to work out what is wrong
waht your budget is

And how long you intend to keep it... if its long term and you "MUST" keep the grenade, then go for a crate donk. Thats your only option.. FULL REBUILD from someone else isnt going ot be any cheaper.

Yes that is - all the add ons, but you already have them.

I'd go a TD42 conversion, but you have been thru this in other threads already.

Just checked out some of the other threads myself bogged, he is looking at a minimum of 4 pistons, a head and possibly the turbo. That would be around 3k for the rebuild kit and the head + the labour. If the turbo is also required, this will be an expense no matter which way he goes.

It is one thing when you can rebuild it with a mate but when you need to pay someone to do the rebuild, the dollars mount up and the new donk starts looking viable

You seem to pay more for them down that way.. they have been advertised on here for $6000-7000... in crates.

Ahhh, that explains where the parts I'm using as an ash tray go... Into that older style motor - two pistons too many I say ... :finger: :finger: :finger: Right back at ya

Note: mkpatrol - you certainly left the door open for that one

Mental note... must be more weary of what I post .... :P

Cheers

Mmmm, not sure you should be casting stones there... Isn't yours basically the same save the addition of a fancy hair drier and something that resembles a radiator that sits ONTOP of the motor - who was the genius that came up with that design on a 4wd :P
