IMO an unlocked portalled RR with 35's would go further than a locked standard RR with the same tyres here in Vic.

We dont necessarily have to have clean terrain. The courses just have to be set so that diff clearance isnt as much of an issue and i think this will happen. There is nothing more boaring to watch than a rig scrable around getting diffed out all the time. I think our rockcrawling comps will head the same way as the US. Less diffing out rocks and more big obstacles (like big ledges and climbs)

which is good because it allows people with only 36's and 37's to enter...cog becomes more important than tyre size and driver skill should determine winners.

just back to the volvo portals, does there seem to be a weak point in the design??
i have seen them apart and the axles and gears look strong compared to rover gear, especiallly with the hub gearing.
is the r+p weak, is it similar to toy/rover or anything?
the housing if anything looks to be a weak point, but only maybe with a three link. but then they came of trucks that carry weight.
i only know of one guy using them under a 110 but thats only just started to wheel.
i do agree portals would be good in vic. IF you keep a low c.o.g.
maybe that 110 will be at the wandin day.

I think the volvos are a very balanced design although not as strong as a mog or build D60. The only weak point I have heard of is the diff lock and guys put modified detroits in to cure. Dont know whats wrong with the diff lock though - this is just what I have picked up on pirate.

I have spoken to a fella from Mlitary Srplus Aus, yes he has them ,, no he cant release them. So how can I get some............. come on fellas someone out there has to have this info.... SOMEONE.... WHERE ARE YOU????....

Volvo portals are a dead axle the only parts availabe are excess stock so to speak.. once it's gone thats it (so the army say). I don't think they are an option because you can build a stronger diff using landy parts... Yeah the portals are good however in the states no one has won major event on them so it leaves one thinking.yeah...

Mal's portal boxes are 1.3:1 and not chain driven. His have two intermediary cogwheels, so rotation is kept the same, just as a chain would do.

They are bolt on on Rover and Sals axles, though.

definitely timmy  but he's such a maller ;)

i agree that the housing may be the weak spot. the square tube is good for carrying loads but i think with a lot of torque and stress it would rip. my diffs are set up like tim's - standard rangie rear end, and 3 link + panhard front. the welds were peened which would reduce warpage but i don't know whether that will stop brackets from being ripped off the housing.

some locker failures can be attributed to the volvo vaccuum diaphram - which is badly designed junk. i expect to have to problems as i will be using the two-way rangie diaphrams.

If the maxidrive portal box's are essentially bolt on - does that mean that hypothetically you could run hilux centres with McNamara axles with the portals bolted to the end?

Hmmmm......

If you have a rover style mounting flange and order custom length JacMac's I think you can run whatever you want in the center.

that is so sweet

good thing it's only 1.3:1 ratio too. otherwise you'd need to find a centre with a numerically low ratio to get any decent road speed.

but a 30% increase plus a 5" lift should be pretty spot on for going to 40" rubber.

IMO this would be a really good axle to run, although somewhat expensive. Very lightweight compared to the other portal options and parts are not a problem.

How much do these MD portals run for???

Let´s see Options:

A. MD Portals and Lockers (your choice)

B. HHD Axles, CVs, R&P, Lockers...etc...THAT WILL BREAK and be $$$

Is there MUCh difference???

I mean, would it not be smarter to stick with stock 24 spline axles (cheap as hell at the junk-yard) and stock CVs and 3.54s and slap in the portals????

I have a smile on my face!

Got to go to a meeting...

Just called OUTBACK IMPORT in France (I am in Germany at the moment) and it seemed that they are selling the LOT of 4 portal MD drop boxes for a WHOPPING 16,500€ (do NOT do the conversion, you´ll faint!)

SO...
It seems that I´ll be sticking with the tried, trusted and HOPEFULLY WILL NOT FAIL MD shafts and other mscelaneous things...

He told me 12grand total the other day for the 2 axles. Although not sure if that was installed or just a kit.
