'85-'88 2L-T Hilux: any with tachometer?

Post by JCL »

Here in Canada, our Hiluxes came with the 2L-T only in the "deluxe" package, and therefore never had a stock tachometer like the SR5 petrol models of the time. Did this vintage of the turbo diesel hilux come with a diesel tachometer in Australia?

I have a 1985 hilux 4x4 turbo diesel, and I need to change the instrument cluster. I replaced the old 2L-T with a 1998 2L-TII from Japan, so I am pretty sure there is a tach sensor on the fuel pump.

Just seeing what is out there for options. Any input would be appreciated.

My present gauge cluster looks like this:

Thanks

From what I know, they all came with the diesel Tach here in Oz. Mines an 84 model with the Tach standard and yes the sensor plugged into the back of the fuel pump.

Thanks for the reply. Does anyone have any pics of such an instrument cluster? Do these have an oil pressure gauge and turbo warning lights too?

I may be interested in having one shipped from Aus...

My 86 2.4d 4Runner has a tacho in the instrument cluster... But my mates 83 2l Petrol Lux didnt.

Surely buying a small tacho would be cheaper than shipping an instrument cluster over for you?

Mine doesnt have an oil pressure guage, just a warning light.
Cheers,
Dan.

Thanks for the comments. Yes, an aftermarket tach is an option, but I want to see what is out there for stock gauge clusters. I prefer to display as much information in the stock instrument cluster location, before I start adding meters and gauges elsewhere. As for shipping the instrument cluster from overseas, it is very light, and wouldn't cost too much.

I really loved my SR5 tach in my 1985 petrol hilux:

Something like this would be great, but with the diesel-related stuff too: glow plug timer light, turbo warning lights.

For petrol hiluxes, this swap is relatively easy.

I dont think you would be able to fit a factory Tacho dash to your diesel rig. There are 2 different injector pumps. One has the sender and one doesnt. The one that doesnt has the hole blanked off and a sender cant be fitted. Yours may have just a plug in where the sender is supposed to be? If so you will also need the sender.

As for an after market Tacho i dont know where you would get a signal from without a sender in the pump.

I have a 88 2lt dash in my 4runner . It looks exactly like the abouve pic, except it only has km/hr instead of miles/hr. It came from a surf, which is a Jap spec 4runner.
