What new law? what does it say about cargo barriers?

Surely they wont give people like ARB the power to ok an installation of a cargo barrier? youd be safer installing yourself!

That would be the new law regulating private installation of cargo barriers (check Section 37-04, sub section d : Installation of Cargo Safety Devices).

They will have to be engineered after the new laws come in.

Qld only, check www.transport.qld.gov.au. NSW already has cargo barrier rules, Vic and WA are soft on them.

I was only taking the piss, but from what i've tracked down in Vic you can DIY, although manufacturers do suggest that a "qualified" person does the install.

In other states i'd say that for legal reasons, a receipt from a qualified fitter/mechanic would suffice.

Thought that was the case, I fitted mine myself but it's thereto keep the dogs in the back more than anything.

Did you use existing mounting holes, or did you have to put some in (rivnut etc.)?

Most of the newer cars i've been in have already had the mounts there for cargo barriers, so its just a case of bolting one in. I think the authorities might get a bit toey with people putting their own mounts etc. in though. I've seen some dodgy-ass barrier installs too (ie. using small gauge sheetmetal screws rather than 8-10mm bolts).

mine is installed not using the fitting kit but it is secured with multiple 8mm+ bolts and 3mm steel straps. Its not going anywhere.
