Airbox lid idea

Post by GU-ish »

Since having put the cooler on my car i was thinking of putting a 3L airbox lid on.
while looking around the net i notice they still dnt have a full radius around the side of them.
what i have thought of doing is removing what plastic mould that is currantly there and using a 3" stainless doughnut (to give a tight full bend) and go from there.
the inside diameter of a 3" doughnut is 30mm, so there would be a gap of 15mm between the lid and the underside of the stainless.
i dnt think its possible to get it any lower, only other way i can think of is doing a lobsterback which wont flow as well.

did some quik measurments and it looks like it will fit under the bonnet.
Any thoughts or ideas welcome. Im no master on the subject.

i here are some pics to better explain it.

STANDARD 4.2 AIRBOX LID

WHERE YOU WOULD MOUNT TO INSIDE THE LID, USING SILICONE AND SMALL NUTS AND BOLTS OR RIVITS. OF COURSE IT WOULD NOT STICK ANY FURTHER IN THAN THE BLACK PLASTIC DOES.

could be done, I would also make a braket to support the end where your induction outlet pipe will attach.

yeah i yas thinking it needed something like that but looking at the benifits of it over the 3l one.
Also does anyone have a 4.2 airbox lid so i can start cutting it up as i drive my car everyday. Will pay.

Why not get the whole airbox out of a ZD30?

Go round and check out colbys one, might be easier?

aido, the air boxs are the same, only the lids differ.

bogged, yes i have seen then that. that is where i got the idea from but there was not much said about how it compaired.
and stainless wouldnt look as "tacky"

so do people think it would work better than the 3L lid?

I do, zd30 lid is not all that different to td42. it is only slightly bigger.

Bogged can proberly find the dyno sheets/specs andy posted about it.

an easy comparison would be to calculate the x section area of the original lid to the pipe.

You may be suprised how much more area the pipe has.

another thought, why does the pipe have to come straight up and right... why cant the pipe that comes up on the top of the lid be on an angle, so then the bend to the turbo is only 45 degrees??

nothing at all... just hard to draw it on a slight angle from the view i did ahahah...
would bring it out on an angle simular to standard.

ok well i came across an airbox lid today (off a 2.8) so i was able to start cutting up my standard 4.2 one. the reason i used the 4.2 over the 2.8 is because the 4.2 has a 3" hole and the 2.8 has a 2.5" hole (or there abouts, its smaller)

took me about 20min to cut it up, now it is in the capable hands of Andrew (awill4x4) welding up the rest... using aluminum not stainless as first planned.
will be excited to see if it fits under the bonnet.

Rough cutout with grinder

cleaned it up with the bench grinder and sanding/ flip disk on the 4" grinder... finished with a touch of sandpaper.

Another pic to show the 3" hole, pretty nice and snug.

So its going to have a 90 degree bend coming out of the top and will sit flush with the top?

will prob sit mayb 10mm above the top, using the tightest bend.
may be able to take more out of the lid to get it lower if possible...
fingures crossed lol

Damn, so you didn't even get a chance to get it dynoed to see if it made a difference?

So do you think it really did make much of a difference? Did it help fuel economy? Did you actually feel higher torque or did you find only the response time improved?

Guess I'm trying to see if it really is worth the $$ and effort. My gut feel is that if anything only response time could improve and only if there was already a high enough restriction to reduce this.

Keen to know if you'd do it again due to the benefits or do you think it's more a perceived improvement.

Thanks again.

Just wondering if you may have had a problem with bonnet clearance anyway, I know mine was fairly tight when I put it in. What was the difference in height between the two lids?
