FJ40 mods

Post by faithy1234 »

G'day,

I've got a '79 SWB FJ40 with a 2F. I'm planning on putting a 4L straight six and auto from an EF Falcon in and running GQ diffs, suspension (lifted) and transfer case. I've spoken to an engineer and he's happy to engineer it all after I have it welded up by a pro.

My main reason is that I want an auto and the Ford engine and auto are so common and easy to replace if needed. The engines go ok too with a cam (for bottom end and mid range, of course) and headers, and they're better on fuel than the 2F. I was going to go 80 series diffs but I've lined up some GQ diffs, control/radius arms and transfer case from a mate. I've heard the patrol transfer is tougher than my FJ40's transfer.

Can anyone see a problem with this? I know half of you would recommend a v8 or to stay with leaves but I have all this gear lined up and reckon it'd be alright. Any ideas?

Cheers,
Josh

I think you'll find the firewall wil need a few mods with the injected six as well
it's never a problem until it can't be fixed, even then it' only a minor set back

I've done the EF I6 conversion to cruiser 5 speed. No big firewall mods, just a little "persuading" to clear the end of the inlet manifold. Good conversion. EF I6 is distributorless. They run a coil pack mounted low under the inlet manifold which can easily be relocated to the top of the rocker cover. Check the link in my sig for pics.

We only went GQ in the front of our 40. We used an 80 series rear.
With the coil conversion we used the GQ coil mount and welded it straight to the chassis with some bracing, and fitted a 5 link as that was what had been previously fitted when we bought it.
