Is a 100 A solenoid big enough to parallel winch batteries?

Post by CT »

If I want to set up my dual batteries to parallel automatically when the winch controller is triggered, is the 100 amp sure power solenoid big enough? They also do the 200 amp but it is more $ ($200 vs $375 respectively).

Any thoughts?

I = P/V

I = Amps
P= Power (wattage)
V= Volts

Divide the wattage of the motors by 12V and the result will be your answer.

Large winches will pull over 400A at max load, depending on vehicle size, winch size/condition, type of use.
100A is too small, but 200A should see you right unless above applies.
Ensure to get a "continuous-duty" type solenoid, and check electrical wholesalers etc as $200 is *way* too much.

I use a 200A ( i think) continuous solenoid to parallel my batteries, works fine. Gets warm though, so do the cables. Was about $80 to buy.

Thanks for the info.

Those prices are for the ARB smart solenoids.
