Can easily be done mate but depending on what power you want to make there are a lot of better turbo's to run.

turbo

Post by Dyls GQ »

i didnt buy a kit as such. im mix and matching all the parts

i bought the turbo aswell as pipes for $400 (only 10,000km old)

im aiming for the whole setup to be under $2000, and so far my rough figures are looking under that

fitting all myself so no labour...only thing i wont do is the 3" exhaust setup

turbo

Post by purplebus »

it is easily done. i have a gq with a series 1 gu pump, turbo and a aftermarket front mount intercooler. you can get more hp out of ser 2 though. if you can try and get the whole kit with water/oil feeds as they are very expensive through nissan but i had hydralink do mine. makes the old girl a lot more driveable.
only the first roll hurts, then its a ride..

i bought a t3 turbo high flowed with ball bearing internals (off vl holden) off ebay for a bargain $220 delivered turboglide manifold with t3 flange $490 i got some fittings and braided oil lines acquired from the pirtek container at work probably bout $60 worth 1/8 bspt t peace and braided oil line and the water lines cost me $50 cash from hosecorp they were pretty good cause i didnt want a receipt, 3" short radius steam pipe bend from atlas steel supplies $22 for the dump pipe and 3" exhaust pipe which i had alot of got 1 of them cheap pyros of ebay $61 delivered it lasted long enough for me to tune it but i sent it back and there sending me a new 1. i will 1 day do a build thread i put some photos on the other thread http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/ftopic184241.php realistically buying stuff straight from the supliers such as atlas steel rather than exhaust shops saves a bit of cash and hunt around ebay you can get some good bargains.

i have literally just finished bolting a gu (hitachi) turbo to my 89 gq total cost was about $2300 but that includes a re-built turbo $980 , digital pyro $300, autometer boost gauge $200 second hand 3" exhaust + dump pipe , mods and fitting $670 plus all the little things like exhaust studs, gaskets ,sealants, inlet plumbing etc etc . I only dove it for the first time an hour ago i think it's money well spent :D just my 2 cents

i've got a oil cooled gu turbo on my 92 patrol, with a rebuilt late model gq fuel pump, it's not the most powerfull set-up but very responsive, running a subaru water to air intercooler, running 13pounds boost. not tuned yet, but very happy already.

turbo

Post by DR Frankenstine »

I had a 4.2 GQ with a GU turbo. Ran 12lb boost had top mount intercooler and 3" straight through exhaust, Ran a pyro and played with the fuel myself. Ran great with heaps of power and spooled up to near full boost at 1500 rpm.
