JK wrangler cv's

Post by rotate_gq »

Hey jeep people!
Mates bought himself a JK for a first fourby, and on the maiden voyage smashed a CV. Whats the going rate for a replacement, and how different is it from a patrol/cruiser/lux set up? I've never been under one before and have heard the setup is slightly different to a typical solid axle front.

Cheers for the help guys.

also, I've never actually been in, or under any kind of jeep. Forgive my ignorance.

The only CV is on the tailshaft - fronts run U joints......

Do you mean the U joint ?
( usual disclaimers )

It seemed like a much better idea when I started it than it does now.

I would assume so. It was making a crunch noise when turning, then a bang offroad, then no power to front wheels.
I'm going off what he's told me, have not had a geez under the car yet.

they are open design tell him to get under and have a look

not too hard to replace. And like any 4wd, tell your mate not to have the wheels cranked to one side while gunning the go pedal.

brought it over today. will be a simple fix, anything i should know? It's a pretty cool setup actually. do they break often? looks less fragile than a cv.

depends on the size of the cv really.

simple fix, get the main nut off, get brakes off then 3 bolts for the wheel bearing unit and your just about there.

what size tyres is he running?

if it's not a rubicon it will have a d30 diff which actually has pretty small outers so is probably only really capable of doing 33's for rough driving ( read i dont know how to drive properly and gun it around corners) and suitable for 35's for an experienced driver.

easy change and there are upgrades in america that can take bigger tyres and more power.
