Turning a 2H into 12Ht

Post by Indy50 »

Can you rebuild a 2H to be similar to a 12HT internally.

I know the pistons are different, along with pre heat systems being different plus the 12HT has extra oild galleries but the bottom ends are basically the same so all the work is up top.

I know everyone is going to say go out and buy a 12HT but they are getting hard to get and expensive. Average price I've found is $8500.

So basically I want to have my old 2H rebulit to handle a turbo as well as a 12HT.

For a start, 12ht is direct injection.

Secondly, your 2H will never be as good on fuel or output the horses a 12ht will with the same amount of work.

If i were you, i'd save and go the 12ht, i speak from lots of experience.

The 2H will end up a disappointment after all the money spent when a factory 12ht blows you off at the lights.

My old 12ht running 14psi boost back in 06, kicked the pants off a brand new 06 model muster ute, he wasnt happy let me tell you!

This will be your best option

There is one on ebay now, $2500 it dont crank, id be asking a few questions before i bought it by phone or in person though.

Worth buying just to sit in the shed till ya get the money to fix it if ya ask me.
But i have my mind set on a V8 next  so no 12ht this time...

you can build it to handle a turbo and make decent power, but it'll cost you, mine ran over $10,000 all said... Wish I had started with a 12H-t, but alas same problem as you $$$....

If I did it again i'd go 12h-t straight up.

What about 1hd-t, already turboed, no need fr rebuild in the $7k-$9k vicinity and very good motors.

Why not just turbo the 2H and add a 3inch mandrell exhaust. If you want to you can fit the oil injectors and steel sintered pistons.

how much rwhp you want?
how much money you got?

Don't pay $8500 for 12HT unless the motor, pump, turbo and injectors are all fresh. You could buy a 1HDT for that!

crank, bores, pistons, rings, valves, valve springs, cam, intake 3" all the way, mandrel, 3" mandrel exhaust and so on. I did that back in 2000ish, was in 4wd monthly in a yellow bj42?

i thought you had a H in the yellow 40? or was that before the 2H?

for that amount of money, i'd be throwing the 1hd-t in there.

but damn you could build a much better petrol/lpg motor and a few years fuel with the change...

was definitely 2h and at the time 1hzs were fetching in the $7-9k vicinity, so a ihd-t was out of the question

I plan to fit the 12HT into a 1989 HJ 75 series landcruiser and from reading different threads on here the 12HT seems to be the best engine to simpily bolt straight in.

I was thinking of turboing the 2H but want to know if its possible to build a 2H as strong internally as the 12HT. But from the replies I have received I am going to spend alot of money trying to re invent the wheel.

Have found a 12HT in wreckers for $5500 with 240000km on the clock. Anyone think this is a good deal or over priced?

Yes, very!
Wave 4 under his snout. 240 means its half worn in/out

No use asking the history, he will either say "i couldnt tell ya and here's 3 months warranty"
OR
"yeah always serviced, an old feller owned it"

Either way your buyin somethin you know nothing about.

Your call but i say 4 is fair, with starter alt.

Nothing wrong with a Turbo on a 2H i've had that combo numerous times my current 60 has one as well goes great.

If your engine is in good nick fit a turbo going to cost you lots of $$$ to buy 12HT and could be up for $$$ in a refesh, new bearings, maybe pistons, rebuilding the turbo etc

My current 60 has 104hp at the wheels which was 58% more power then pre turbo makes big difference but if you don't think that would be enough go the 12HT

If your 2H is a bit sad i'd tart up the 12HT over a 2H

I would have answered yes, you can rebuild a 2h with 12ht internals and head/etc...they are thesame block.
The 1hz can be turned into a hdt or a hdft with those motors internals.

I think it was a standard one that was ground, or relobed, dunno much about cams. I spent a little over $10k plus turbo, back in around 1999...

It would be the best money you ever spent on the 45 along side a disc conversion and power steering.
