A bit new to 4wd scene and have no idea on where to start on tires, have 15x8 rims -20 offset and currently bald tires, no suspension upgrades yet, no planned body lift, have cut the rear quarters and have no problem taking the corners of the front bumper off.
I'm sliding towards the Kumho KL71's and was thinking of 33" but the nice tire dealer will give me 35's at a cheaper price. NZD$1500 inc fitting and balance, $1650 for the 33's, where did others start? I don't have a huge budget, just doing a bit at a time (91 LWB Safari)

33"s will save you more $$$$ in long run because you only need a 2" lift vs at least 4 for 35"s. Nearly double the money to go the extra 2" properly.
There's not too many places you'll go where a 35 is that much better than a 33. Just remember to drive to suit the size tyres you have.
Also remember that the bigger and heavier the tyre you fit, the more power at the wheels you will sacrifice. The patrol safaris aren't exactly rolling in it when it comes to power stakes.
Those prices, were they for a set of 5 or only 4

and any way for the same price u can get a 3" lift kit and run 35's with minimal chopping..
how ever if you run 35's all day they will cost you a bit more in fuel.. well a fairbit more.. so you might want to change the diff ratios to 4.6
So over time.........Buy 33's and chop the guards.......2" lift for xmas........make the next set 35"? Unfortunately the budget dictates tires before lift due to excessive wear.

Mate I ran 33's for years, had 4" lift with no quarter cut, radius arm spacing or front guard cut, the 33 is a good size tyre and doesn't affect the gearing too badly. You will/would get some scrubbing on the inner rear guards though unless you set your bumpstops up.
Now have 35" on 4" lift (truck #2) with 40mm b/lift, quarter cut guards with drop boxes and trimmed front guards, the gearing difference doesn't bother me that much as it still gets along quite well. I went to 35"s because they quoted $100 difference between BFG 33's. I'm sticking with 35's permanently now.
For 35's - trim the guards, and stick with the idea of no body lift.
I noticed a big difference with clearance and driveability with the 35's over the 33's so go for it.

Why dont you just go and drive the car before spending a cent on it?
find out what you think is lacking, what your willing to accept, and put off? No point buying 33's then being pist cause your suspension is totally fucked, or something else is rooted, and then spend the next 5 yrs broke fixing shit..

I have been driving the safari for a while on the factory tires and rims, its that time to buy new tires to keep it road worthy,
Take the next step and see how much further I can push it.
It has been taken all over the country and the thing it seems to lack is clearance and traction, hence the reason for mud tires, the differance is now I'm doing it for fun not work
At the moment I have 245/75/R16 AT about 30.5", at full articulation they hit the inner guard, 31" on offset rims is sweet with a bit of space to fill.
The tire guy seems pretty straight up and is willing to try a few different sizes and brands so I can see how much where...........etc, his curiosity seems to be in my favor.
Will have a look this weekend and keep you posted,
