1.6 Vitara Conversion Questions
1.6 Vitara Conversion Questions
Hi guys
My 1.3l shit its self on the weekend (cracked the No 4 piston) and now I need another engine for my zook and I’m looking at doing a 1.6 conversion either with using at 1.3 head, that has a hot cam, extractors and Weber 32/36 carbie or go to efi? I would prefer to keep it simple and keep the 1.3L head but I’m unsure if the setup would take the compression ratios?
I can get a 1.6L 16v engine with 220,000 km on it for $880
Wiring looms for $220
And adaptor kit for $200
What would people recommendations be?
And what would I need to modify to get the engine in and running, obviously an adaptor kit but what else? Would the standard sierra radiator handle it or would I need a larger one?
Thanks Mitchell

definitely go EFI.
does that $200 for the loom include the computer???
Mines set up as:
1.6 carby bottom end, Jimny 16v top end (with jimny loom and computer), and vitara 1.6 injectors on top.
was previously a g16a carby running weber 32/36 - went great, but the EFI is the same improvement again over going from 1.3 to 1.6 carby.

There is no comparison between the drivability of EFI and carby. If you have the money and skill, go EFI.
I've never heard anyone regret going EFI. It's the business. It's not all about power (although it's normally better in any case) but it's all about ease of starting in all conditions and predictable behaviour on bumps and on all angles.
Steve.

Yes, the stock radiator should be fine.
Bear in mind that's not the whole cost. you'll need to set up an EFI fuel system, VSS, exhaust work etc.
Still good value as swaps go.
Steve.
PS is this pricing for a MPFI or TBI motor? Some swifts used TBI (Throttle body) EFI- which is less sophisticated but still functional. I haven't set up a TBI car but people on here have.

i did the EFI conversion about 5 months ago... still loving every second of it!! My 1.3 radiator wouldnt handle it, so i had to fit the 1.6 radiator. I have written up a thread on "how to do the EFI G16A conversion".. its in Auszookers somewhere. All the pics and info you need
F&R ARB air lockers, lux diffs, 4 link coil rear, drop shackles, inboarded ranchos, stage 4 reduction gears, 35" silverstones, 9500 winch, RUF, 1.6 EFI, swimming goggles
Get the 1.3 radiator rodded out or cleaned and will keep the 1.6 kool easy.
esp if u keep the OEM engine fan.
Ditto go the EFI, Loved mine since i have done it.

hey guys got the engine, computer, loom and extractor (almost new) today for $1200, and ordered Ben T adaptor kit for $200. just a qick question can i use the 1.3 clutch and flywheel for the conversion.
also the only thing the engine is missing is the air flow monitor does anyone have or know where i could get one from?

yeah 1.3L clutch and flywheel are the go. prob be worth replacing the clutch while it is apart just cause you can. I went for a HD clutch as wellMitchie wrote:hey guys got the engine, computer, loom and extractor (almost new) today for $1200, and ordered Ben T adaptor kit for $200. just a qick question can i use the 1.3 clutch and flywheel for the conversion.

I have a diagram I made with all the extra crap that you dont need deleted, but i dont think it would apply to youre engine as yours has an MAF sensor if i understand you correctly.
x2 with the 1.3 radiator handling a 1.6. Im still using the 1.3 rad with a thermo fan, and it keeps the 1.6 cool no problems.

MAF stands for Mass Air Flow. You mentioned a few posts up youre missing an 'air flow monitor'. I dont know if they ever came out with MAF sensors, but I assume thats what youre talkin about.Mitchie wrote:maf sensor? whats that? im not that great with the electronics
could you fil me in thanks.

1.6 convo qustions
ok so ive got a few qustions about this as well, ive got a whole efi vitara wreck and ive got a fair idear a bout what i need but dose some one have a list of all things ill need from it
you need
- engine
- airbox
- intake
- loom
- ecu
And to make it easier and better
- VSS out of the speedo
- radiator
- fuel tank
Then you need to buy a gearbox adaptor (PM BenT) and sort out your wiring.. either do it yourself or send it to someone like Killalux and he will return it ready to plug and play.
From the old 1300 you need the sump and oil pickup to make something similar to this:

my 1.6 EFI fits under with room to spare and no bodylift at all. I have lifted the bonnet at the hinges and put spacers in the front though - overall about 5mm bonnet lift.
EDIT: for parts try www.suzistore.com.au - online store and they have pretty much everything - contact direct if you want second hand parts (wrecked).

GRRR! i wrote a big long description and instructions and the site crashed... so stuff it. ahha
- loosen bonnet hinge bolts at firewall, lift and tighten up.
- rubber stoppers for chair legs over the standard rubbers.
- cut, extend and shut the catch
...had the server not crashed you'd have detailed instructions.. lol sorry

Not that it matters to most but i believe it is also illegal to do bonnet lift at the back i have heard.
I think this is mainly directed towards the V8 brigade who lift the rear of the bonnet 20mm+ thou.

yeah that in case of a massive oil leak the sprays up into the engine bay - if theres a gap at the back the oil will go up the front window... the bonnet lift through the existing bolt holes maxes at around 5mm of lift, and the seam of the bonnet still seals it off to the outside air.
