Moderators: toaddog, TWISTY, V8Patrol, Moderators
308lux i ordered the full axle rebuild kit($100) which does both sides and wheel bearings($38each side) from a local bearing supplier, total is about $180.
ill just get a normal 54mm socket bit then, a pair of straight circlip pliers, a rubber mallet(i dont have one of them), ill also get a few more tins of supercheap degreaser, and a heap of grease.
im assuming that straight circlip pliers will be the ones i need??
what kind of grease will i need?? and how much of it will i use??
thanks again

i rang a few places thursday looking for a 54mm bit, gasweld had 50mm then 55mm. they said try some truck places, so i did, nothing, i rang bwip(brisbane water industrial products), they only had impact 54mm, 3/4inch drive
so seeing as it was the only one i could find, i bought it, and i only have 1/2inch drive i had to get an adaptor as well, so 60bucks later and im good to go.
i got the rebuild kit and bearings today, and started pulling the drivers side apart this arvo, got the hub off, just about to take the 54mm nut off and the 54mm bit i bought wont fit, its too big in diameter to fit inside the hole where the nut is .
so im taking the socket bit and adaptor back tomorrow and im hoping i can get something somewhere else, ill even try bunnings
so im asking where will i find a 54mm bit that will fit inside the hole where the nut is??
also, the circlip pliers i need, are they internal or external?? the guy at the bearing shop couldnt remember which one i need.

i just got back from driving around the tool/truck shops local to me.
i couldnt take the impact socket bit back to the shop i got it from as the were closed(even though website says open sat morns), i went to a bunch of other tool shops and they had nothing, tried a couple of truck places and they had nothing.
i didnt know which circlip pliers i need so i got both(internal and external).
but now i cant continue with the axle rebuild cause i cant get the 54mm locknut off.
someone said to use a flathead screwdriver and a hammer to get the nut off, sounds a bit dangerous to me, i dont want to damage anything.
anyone have any tips/advice for me.
im stuck and i really wanted to get this done so i can drive again.

Mate, they're not that tight. Open the taps off the first nut and just tap it around with a screwdriver and hammer. Take the tab washer off then do the second nut the same.
Look on ebay for those 54mm sockets under hilux. Heaps of places have them.

I have to admit that I've been guilty of this in the past too and it does work in a pinch but it's a shitty method for doing the job as it's more or less impossible to torque them correctly when doing them back up.Willy Hilux wrote:Mate, they're not that tight. X2 on ebay. Trade tools can get them too if they don't have them in stock. Like I said, I have one here (1/2" drive) you are welcome to borrow if you can get to my place.

i havent rebuilt the front yet, as ive been searching everywhere local for the 54mm bit, v840 kindly offered to lend me his, but im going to need my own anyway, and id rather use my own tools, no offence v840.
i tried all the tool shops, the truck shops, the truck spares shops, nothing anywhere, i tried metaland near me, they told me they could order one in for me, i thought ok good, then they told me it wont be in until mid january, wtf i thought.
so ive just ordered the one off ebay from online autoparts, 28 bucks express posted from brissy, so ill send mrs d into the bank tomorrow to pay them and ill have it on fri.
its been a mission to get this job done.
now, i said i was going to swap centres and put the 4.8s in, i was cleaning the spare front centre and i came across some writing underneath all the grease and dirt that said "hilux 4.3" bugger, so i dont see much point swapping centres for the same ratio, theres nothing wrong with the 4.3s in the lux now, so ill keep em as spares.
so hopefully the socket comes in friday and i can finally get the axle rebuilt and drive the lux again
thanks everyone for all youre help and advice you guys are all champs
