Air cond question

Post by DionM »

My 81 2 door Auto has A/c fitted ... but not working.

The missing wire in the attached photo probably has something to do with it.

Anyone got any insight into how the A/C works in the earlier Rangies? Its got the "Custom Air" panel on the inside.

Try to hook that wire up to where ever it came from. It normallyt ends up going to a pressure switch (which somewhere on one of the ac lines or on the reciever dryer) and then goes into the dash to the thermostate.

If you want to do a quick check to see if it works just temporarily join that wire to the battery and see if the clutch works. Then if your evaporator blower motor works then turn that on with th eloose wire powered up and see if it makes cold air. If this works then you just need to hook the loose wire up properly.

If the system hasnt worked for a while then its probably lost its gas anyway.

Thanks Sam. The blower motor works, and the a/c fan even starts, just not the clutch in this thing obviously. I'll whack it onto +12V and see what happens. Probably won't have any gas, but I should still be able to hear it cut in and out (extra load on the motor) ?

Spot on you should hear the clutch and feel the load on the engine.
If it all goes, get a re-gas and tell them to put a heap of oil in the system, drive around with it for a while, if it loses its gas pop the bonet and look for the ac joint, hose that is covered in ac oil and there is your problem

Good Luck

You should also be able to see the clutch start spinning when you put power to that wire. With no power the very front part of the compressor shouldnt turn (the disc part that is in front of the pully) and when powered up it should lock onto the pully that the belts drive.

Thanks Sam - I'll try it and see if it works. When the beast is rego'd I might take you up on your offer as the exchange sounds good - one cool refreshment for another type of cool refreshments

Its also a good idea to get a A/C dye chucked in the system.. it saves a lot of time in the long run trying to find a leak if you have to...
