MQ steering Box questions

Post by Screwy »

hey guys,

1. Are the ratios in MQ steering boxes different in a powersteer box compared to a non-powersteer box?

also

2. is it possible to run a power steering box with the hoe outlets plugged and powersteer fluid in it but no pump?

cheers,

power steer

hi screwy
Yes the ratios are different and you thought the steering was heavy before.
You can use just about any pump , I had a pump off an old falcon for ages when i had the 351v8 on board. worked fine.

Saginaw pumps work really well, halved the steering effort in my MK

Nah, i realise that all the pumps can be used if ya mount em right. Thats not the question.
My new steering setup from Offroad industries that ive fitted was designed and drilled for a power steering box.

I have lost my full lock by about 20mm either side of the bump stops which is about 4 inches on each wheels movement. ( i cant get around a coldasack in one go in the shorty MQ!!!! ).

If the ratios are definatly diferent then that would be the proplem for sure.
My V8 is going in in a little over a month, and im adapting the power steering pump to it, thats all cool.

wat im saying is that i dont want to wait a month, driving around with such a crapy turning circle before putting the v8 in. So i would like to know if i can put the power steering box on now, plug the pipes and fill with oil and drive it around with out the pump for a month until the V8 goes in with the pump on the v8, i dont want to but it on the diesel for a month...???

And will it damage the box?

thanks for ur help so far guys!

I wouldn't try to drive it without the PS hooked up, I drove down my street without the PS hooked up after the engine swap and I could barely turn the wheel.

well, ive got to buy the PS box anyways so IF it wont damage it ill fit it and c how bad it is, though i only have to put up with it for a month. I think i might rather a heavy wheel than one that barely has a turning circle........
Wat u think?

You wont be able to drive it safely on the road with a non connected PS box, I needed 2 hands pulling down on the wheel to barely get it to turn.

My advice...Don't do it.

stick with the 3 point turn till u get the v8 in as it feels like you are going to rip the column out of the dash just rolling out of the driveway
