Had a look at a set of the Kevlars next to the old MTR's and the Kevlars do look very good.
Interestingly, when holding up an slightly worn old type 33x12.5 next to a new 33x12.5 kevlar the new kevlars have a lot more tread depth and they stand a fair bit taller also - probably about 1" as a guess.

The Kevlar MTRs are one of the few new tyres that are true sizes now. I have just bought a set of 285/75/16 kevla mtr's. Only driven on the road so far. I cant believe how quiet they are. Thet are quite aggressive when you see then in real life. I had mtz's in 265/75/16 previously which were bout 50% worn. The new mtr's are so much better on the road, steering, handling and quietness are fantastic. (Compared to the new mtz'z)
If these tyres do not loud are they have worn a little then I wouldnt buy an all terrain just for quietness or on road handling.

Sorry to jump in on the conversation mate! Hahaha! Sitting shotgun with you on that trip I can vouch for how well the MTR's did, and will be buying a set for my TJ soon, and for the upcoming GQ. Was 1st low most of the way up with some wheelspin here and there - wet clay mud.
Could be different drivers that made the difference - he's a little more gentle with things than me and maybe just didn't clear the treads.
Either way i'm happy with the mt/r's thus far.

I can't imagine them getting better but I know that there is a point in a tires life that it is a good as it can be.
I have driven this same car for 7 years now. It has had TSL's, Iroks, and sticky iroks and now the Goodyear MTRs on it in that time. So far I am more than pleased with the way the tires hooked up and held their line, if they couldn't get traction a little wheel spin and they grabbed and off you went. It seems that the MTR made the car work even better.

Started off the day amazing. but by midday not so good.
Seems 20 psi may not have been low enough. They were bagging, but not much. Have rounded off leading edges and chipped the tread quite a bit. I don't exactly drive with a lead foot either but there was alot of wheelspin as it was quite slippery all day.
A bit dissapointed at the wear at this stage. They won't last more than 10 day trips at this rate. But traction...I was very impressed. Mud was not as bad as many make out, infact pretty sure they were better than the Bighorns i used to have. Directional stability was excellent, sideways crossslope traction brilliant, road handling very good. I could go on...
Hopefully running lower pressures will imrpove this ghastly wear. My last muddies, maxxis bighorns didn't chip and tear as quickly as these things are :(

I have had a set for quite some time now and the same set has been on 2 vehicles and been happy with thema nd have been used alot on different terrain but i recently used tehm at cape york and i will say that destroyed them.
In the last 2 months i have slced the sidewall of 2 tyres and i know thsi can happen to every tyre but i had other vehicles follow with different breed of tyres and ho damge to there's at all and all im saying is that once this set is worn out i will no longer be buying them again and dont get me started on teh price at near enough to $400 a pop and i cna get maxxis creepies cheaper than that.

ormeau is epic rock. add a bit of water and there's going to be alot of wheelspin and slip. only tyres which don't seem to get owned at ormeau are from the likes of Simex.
my ATs got torn up pretty badly last time I went out there as well.
But there is no doubt in my mind that the kevlar MTR in 285/75r16 with white sidewall writing is not the pick if you drive jagged, shale-type rock terrain. the tread is simply not going to hold up to it.

I rang up for a quote today (22/2/2010) and the 31x10.5r15 Kevlar MTR's were $330 (out of my price range).
Just for comparison sake, I got other quotes for 31's at a number of different places also. MTZ- $295, ATZ- $270, Bridgestone Dueler MT- $295, Cooper ST- $278, Maxxis Bighorn- $239, Maxxis Buckshot- $185.
If I had more money to burn, I would definitely consider getting a set of the new ones for my Pajero, as I own and old set of 235/75r15 on my Suzuki Sierra and cant fault them, even after 90,000kms and 5 years.
Just for comparison sake, I got other quotes for 31's at a number of different places also. MTZ- $295, ATZ- $270, Bridgestone Dueler MT- $295, Cooper ST- $278, Maxxis Bighorn- $239, Maxxis Buckshot- $185.

makes me think even more i simply didn't have enough air out of the tyres. i really was struggling for traction and coupled with the heep having a shiteload of torque/fully locked doesn't help with being nice to tyres on sharp shale-type wet rock.
Luckily i can just swap sides the tyres are on and they will have fresh biting tread.
